Navy Dental Corps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dental officer work load may be less than that of private practice but the stress and demand that operational billets place on the officer as well as his/her family far surpasses that of the private sector.
Although the number of patients seen by the dental officer may be less than that of a private practitioner, his duties and responsibilities far surpass that of his / her civilian counterpart.
A dental officer is greatly underpaid when taking into consideration the burden of family separation, his/her level of professional skill and responsibility in life threatening and often arduous situations when compared to his civilian counterpart.

When it is noted that the Army and Navy, together, mobilized about 22,318 dental officers in the war it is apparent that they were close to the bottom of the manpower barrel, and that no significant increase in the overall ratio of dental officers to total strength was possible.
By this time the Dental Corps was down to 13,600 men, and on 20 September the Deputy Surgeon General requested that the commissioning of MAC students be resumed to permit the earlier discharge of older dentists.
One hundred and two dental officers were in the grades of colonel or lieutenant colonel, 146 were in grades of captain or lieutenant, and only 21 officers were in the grade of major, where maximum physical vigor was combined with at least 12 years of experience.

 Dimensions of Dental Hygiene
Widespread fluoride use is primarily responsible for the decline in the prevalence and severity of dental caries in the United States during the past 50 years.
Although the benefits of fluoride are well-documented, recent studies suggest that dentists and dental hygienists alike may underestimate its effectiveness and, thus, underuse it as a preventive therapy.
Fluoride accumulates in dental plaque and when the plaque pH drops, eg, when the bacteria produce acids, it diffuses into the bacterial cell to disrupt cellular functions such as sugar transport and glycolysis.
