The Navy Unit Commendation of the United States Navy is an award that was established by order of the Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal on 18 December 1944.
This commendation is awarded by the Secretary to any ship, aircraft, detachment, or other unit of the naval service of the United States Navy which has, subsequent to 6 December 1941, distinguished itself by outstanding heroism in action against the enemy, but not sufficient to justify award of the Presidential Unit Citation.
The Coast Guard equivalent of the Navy Unit Commendation is the Coast Guard Unit Commendation.

John H. Dalton, Secretary of the Navy, presented the prestigious Navy Unit Commendation jointly to the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and its parent organization, the Office of Naval Research (ONR), during a recent ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard.
The Navy Unit Commendation Award was established by the Secretary of the Navy in December 1944 and is awarded by the Secretary, with the approval of the President, generally for outstanding heroism in action against the enemy or, under certain circumstances, for extremely meritorious service outside of combat in support of military operations.
Navy Unit Commendation recipients may display the award by wearing either a ribbon (military) or a pin (civilians).

To justify this commendation the unit must have performed service as a unit of character comparable to that which would merit the award of a Silver Star Medal or Legion of Merit to an individual.
Such personnel are authorized to wear a bronze star upon the ribbon for each additional commendation of the unit in which they serve during the occasion for which the unit is commended, whether it be the same or another unit.
All personnel attached to and serving on board the U.S.S. Purdy on April 12, 1945, are authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.

When a fire fight is initiated the unit response is to go and assist that part of the unit which is in contact, the process is not democratic, it is unanimous, immediate and requires no command.

Shore commands and shore-based units fly them from the most appropriate hoist determined by the local commander, normally the port yardarm of a mast rigged with a crosstree.
With one exception, only the ships or comparable units involved in the action or service for which the citation was issued may display the pennant for the citation.
Pennant is yellow with broad stripes of Old Glory blue and scarlet along the upper and lower edges, 27 units hoist by 57 units fly, 48 units to the fork of the swallowtail; yellow stripe is 13 units wide at the hoist.

The US Navy Unit Commendation confers on the recipient the right to wear a distinctive pennant, a green burgee with blue, yellow and scarlet horizontal stripes top and bottom.
The commendation, established in 1944, is a highly valued honour and during the period of the Vietnam war, had no equivalent in the Australian system of awards.
As an element of Task Unit 70.8.9 HMAS PERTH provided Naval Gunfire Support for United States and Allied Forces ashore in the Republic of Vietnam, and as an element of Task Group 77.1 in the Gulf of Tonkin, supported Naval Operations against North Vietnamese logistics groups and lines of communications.

During the Korean War, this unit, nicknamed "The Borinqueneers" after one of the original Indian tribes inhabiting Puerto Rico, quickly won respect on the battlefield.
During October and November 1950, the 65th RCT participated in search-and-destroy missions targeting the remnants of North Korean Army units left in South Korea to harass U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK) forces.
