After Soviets gained power (1920), the foundation stone for the autonomy of Naxcivan was laid by the Moscow and Kars international treaties of March 16, 1921 and October 13, 1921, respectively.
The status of Naxcivan Autonomous Republic (ASSR) within Azerbaijan SSR was established in 1924.
Naxcivan used to be “connected” to the rest of Azerbaijan by the Zangezur district, which was given to Armenia in December 1920.
