Topic: Naxos (record label)

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Record label (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Most major record labels are owned by a few large multinational companies (Big Four record labels) that make up the almost all of the global recording industry, although there is a recent resurgence in independent record labels.
Often the record label's decisions are correct ones from a commercial perspective, but this typically frustrates the artist who feels that their artwork is being destroyed.
Such labels have a reputation for being fiercely uncompromising and especially unwilling to cooperate with the Big Five record labels at all.

 The history of Naxos
Naxos is also working with experts in the field of music education to produce a series of music lessons, each consisting of a CD of musical examples, a text book for the teachers and work sheets for the students, to enable music teachers in primary and secondary schools to teach classical music more effectively.
Naxos, the Greek island where Ariadne was once abandoned by Theseus to the mercies of Dionysus, has now become a word familiar to all record buyers, the name of a CD label which has impressed collectors by its quality, range and, not least, its price.
The label and the mission have been astonishingly successful and this success lies in the flexibility of a stream-lined operation, the willingness to accept new repertoire ideas and the emphasis on the music itself rather than on the performer.

As of 2005, it is the largest-selling classical label in the world.
Compared to other major record labels, the Naxos selection may be shallower in terms of interpretations of a given masterwork.
For example, the Naxos catalog has only three orchestral recordings of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, with the conductors Bela Drahos, Richard Edlinger and Richard Strauss (the last an historic recording), compared to Deutsche Grammophon, which has Abbado, Bernstein, Böhm, Karajan, Kleiber, and Thielemann, some of whom have recorded the piece on more than one occasion.
