Nazareth National Speedway was a 1 1/8th mile D shapped dirt oval, built in 1966, built adjacent to a 1/2 mile dirt track that continued to operate into the 1980s.
The racetracks of Nazareth are noted for the fact that Mario Andretti and his brother Aldo got their start in racing there, although this predates the construction of the modern Nazareth Speedway (Mario had already made his first appearance in USAC's Gold Crown ("Indycar") series before Nazareth National Speedway opened).

It was quite a year for Andretti, a Nazareth, Pa., resident who has seen numerous incarnations of the facility over the years.
In 1999, Nazareth Speedway merged with International Speedway Corporation, which this spring announced plans to shutter the facility at the end of this racing season.

Nazareth officials received written notification of the decision last week, speedway president and general manager Craig Rust said Thursday.
Rust said he was not told by the board why they voted not to renew with the speedway, a decision that means fans in the Northeast will have to travel to Cleveland or Toronto to watch CART racing.
Mario Andretti, who lives in Nazareth, said Thursday that the CART races haven't drawn large crowds, but that's mainly because the races had been held in the fall when it was too cold.

Nazareth Speedway President and General Manager Craig Rust confirmed today that CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) will not return to the historic one-mile oval after the 2001 season.
Nazareth Speedway has hosted a CART event since 1987, one year after former track owner Roger Penske bought the facility and turned a one-mile dirt track into a state-of-the-art, one-mile paved oval.
Nazareth Speedway hosted either a September or October event for the first eleven years, but the race was moved to the spring starting in 1996.

The speedway, built as a dirt track in 1966, is on 157 acres at Routes 191 and 248 in Lower Nazareth Township.
During the height of the track's popularity, officials said, Lower Nazareth received more than $100,000 from the amusement tax, though that was down to $30,000 by the final year, a result of a change in law and declining attendance.
