However, the Nextstation MegaPixel Color Display is a 16-inch Trinitron RGB monitor that offers the standard Next features (1120 by 832 resolution, 68Hz refresh rate, 92 dpi), while the built-in video supports 16 bits per pixel at that resolution.
The Nextstation Color comes with a small device called the Sound Box, which converts the video signal to a standard RGB/sync output, so you can connect the Nextstation Color to the monitor of your choice.
While the Nextstation Color and Mac IIci are competitively priced, the Nextstation Color still has a decided performance advantage, along with better color, a larger display area (almost three times bigger) a DSP chip, sound input, built-in Ethernet, and bundled software.

The Nextstation is a flat fl slab, 15 1/2 inches wide by 14 1/3 in.
The Nextstation has a significant advantage over the Macintosh IIsi, which Apple bills as its "cheapest modular Macintosh." A not-really-comparable Mac contender -- with 8MB of RAM, a 40MB hard drive, the 68882 FPU, and the Apple Portrait Display (640-by-870-dpi resolution and 16 shades) -- costs about $800 more than the Nextstation.
Because of the limited disk space, Next suggests that the Nextstation is best used on a network or with an external hard drive.

Marger Johnson has chosen the NeXTstation as its office standard, with 12 machines already installed and three more expected by the end of this year.
Johnson said that although the Sun machine was an able performer, the NeXTstation came equipped with bundled software, e-mail, and voice annotation.
Most of the first NeXTstations went to the firm's higher-paid employees, because they were most likely to use its features for real cost savings.

NeXTstation Color computers combine near photographic quality color and an object-oriented operating and development environment in an easy-to-use, professional color workstation.
NeXTstation Color computers — which may be configured with 16 to 128 MB of memory — take advantage of the color support offered in Display PostScript, which features the capability of real-time software dithering allowing NeXTstation Color computers to display 32-bit-per-pixel images in 16 bits with near photographic quality.
NeXTstation Color computers are currently available in 16 or 32 MB RAM configurations.

What the docs are saying is that there is a boot-loader file called 'boot' under the NeXTstep filesystem which you need to copy to your auth/bootp server.
So you need both 9nextstation (which you get with the Plan 9 CD), and the boot file (which indeed you need to get from a working NeXTstep filesystem) in order to make a nextstation boot up over the network.
If you don't want to set up a PC file server and auth/bootp server, you can take a look at http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/plan9/info/next.html for at least some information on using u9fs, the unix hack to do Plan 9 file service...
