Purvis commented that Pierce Brosnan was the perfect actor to draw out the complex combination of emotion and cold-blood the scene had required: "He is vulnerable without being weak".
Judging from the new Express interview, both Purvis and Wade, who are known as 'The Men With the Golden Pens', have been determined to continue developing the darker side of Bond, but also to give audiences the certain things they expect: the Q scene, the Moneypenny scene, new gadgets, and so on.
Purvis added further comments to his partner's experiences on the new film by praising Brosnan in particular: "Pierce is very approachable.

Neal Purvis added: “We don’t want to hark back to the old Bond films, because everyone goes on about that.
Purvis responded: “The film started off down-and-dirty and got into the realms of You Only Live Twice and Moonraker, which was fun to do once”.

 "Best Screenwriting Magazine"--LA Times
Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis reboot the Bond franchise to show us James' origins as a spy, and introduce us to the woman who made him into the man we love, in a gritty, dark film that may be the series' best yet.
The most important element to Bond is his character, and with this reboot the writers strip away all the gadgets and series' clichés to bring us the origin story of how James Bond became the Queen's deadliest secret agent.
With their raw, emotional portrayal of a spy in love and their commitment to character over action, Neil Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis have come up with maybe the best version of Bond yet, and one that would surely make Ian Fleming beam with pride…even if this Bond happens to be blonde.

 Eugene Weekly : Movie Review : 11.22.06
Written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade &; Paul Haggis.
The use of Fleming's first Bond tale as a source text appears to mean that screenwriters Robert Wade and Neal Purvis (with the help of Crash writer-director Paul Haggis) were restrained from the level of campy inanity that made a joke of 2002's Die Another Day.
Gone is the bloodless cartoonishness; in its place is a gritty realism that, though it doesn't entirely dispense with the series' conventions, does give Bond an enjoyable kick in what British Treasury official Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) would call his perfectly formed arse.

While you may not recognize screen writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade for their work on Let Him Have It, An American Werewolf in Paris or even their first Bond film, The World is Not Enough, after watching the DVD of Die Another Day their faces will be familiar.
There’s no such messy politics here at Ultimate DVD, as Purvis and Wade take centre stage to discuss their work on the film and subsequent disc release, a long, cash-guzzling process that begins, importantly, with the writers familiarizing themselves with the whole Bond franchise.

When Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond for Goldeneye, much was made about how the franchise was being "modernized." In reality, the only apparent changes were cosmetic.
It's not as if an entirely new group was brought in for the "re-boot." The producers continue to be Michael G. Wilson and Barbara (daughter of Cubby) Broccoli.
The writers are Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (with an assist from Paul "he's everywhere these days" Haggis), who were involved in scripting the last two Brosnan movies.

One hesitates to call "Casino Royale" a spy bash for grown-ups, because Fleming's vicious imperialist-bastard worldview always had a bully-boy adolescent streak to it.
But with "Casino Royale," you don't get the nagging feeling that screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and rewrite man Paul Haggis ("Crash") preoccupied themselves with demographics, or getting the kids in to see it, or even the idea of topping themselves with each new location.
