  Tides
Tides in the oceans cannot move freely because of the continents.
The incoming tide simply washed the tea ashore, and work parties with shovels cleaned it off the waterfront and threw it back into the harbor next day (pollution was not a concern for most people in those days!).
As the tide rose and water levels in the lagoon reached 1.5 meters (five feet), landing craft would head ashore and by noon, at high tide, heavier craft could come ashore bringing tanks and supplies.

Tide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tide is the cyclic rising and falling of Earth's ocean surface caused by the tidal forces of the Moon and the Sun acting on the Earth.
The changing tide produced at a given location on the Earth is the result of the changing positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth coupled with the effects of the rotation of the Earth and the local bathymetry (the underwater equivalent to topography).
These depths are relative to "chart datum", which is the level of water at the lowest possible astronomical tide (tides may be lower or higher for meteorological reasons) and are therefore the minimum water depth possible during the tidal cycle.

Tide table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tide heights at intermediate times (between high and low water) can be approximately calculated using the rule of twelfths or more accurately by using a published tidal curve for the port.
Tide tables are published as small booklets in their own right, as part of nautical almanacs, on the Internet, in some newspapers (generally those serving readers in coastal regions or having maritime interests) and as the output of tidal prediction software.
The dates of spring tides and neap tides, which have an interval of seven days, can be determined by the range of the height of the tide on the tide table; a small range indicates neaps and large indicates springs.

Spring tides are tides that exceed the height of average or mean high tides.
Neap tides are tides that do not flood over the surface of the high marsh.
When both daily tides fall below the break in elevation between the low marsh and the high marsh, tides are said to be in a neap tide cycle; this is also when larger fish stay at ambush points in the outer coastal waters.

Ocean in Motion: Tides - Charactersitics
Tides are the periodic rise and fall of the ocean waters.
The key to tides is the varying strength of the Moon's gravitational pull on different parts of the globe.
The timing of tides is determined by the Earth's rotation and the Moon's orbit around the Earth.

tide is the vertical rise and fall of the sea level surface caused primarily by the change in gravitational attraction of the moon, and to a lesser extent the sun.
The time difference between spring tide and neap tide is normally 7 days and is in accordance with the phases of the moon.
Tide: The vertical rise and fall of the surface of a body of water caused primarily by the differences in gravitational attraction of the moon, and to a lesser extent the sun, upon different parts of the earth when the positions of the moon and sun change with respect to the earth.

This static theory explained the connection with the moon, the semidiurnal tide, and the alternation of spring and neap tides as the superposition of the lunar and solar tides, and gave a reasonable estimate of the tidal range.
The tides are not simultaneous, as in the Gulf.
Further west, the tides at Colón, Panama and Port Royal, Jamaica have a similar pattern, the diurnal tide predominating, but with a significant semidiurnal component that is increasingly important towards neap tides.

 The Moon And Tides
The word "tides" is a generic term used to define the alternating rise and fall in sea level with respect to the land, produced by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun.
Tides are the periodic rise and falling of large bodies of water.
This very high tide occurs when the moon is both unusually close to the Earth (at its closest perigee, called the proxigee) and in the New Moon phase (when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth).

 Why Tides?
The areas of high water levels are high tides and the areas of low levels are low tides.
When the sun and moon are aligned, there are exceptionally strong gravitational forces, causing very high and very low tides which are called spring tides, though they have nothing to do with the season.
When the sun and moon are not aligned, the gravitational forces cancel each other out, and the tides are not as dramatically high and low.
