Video on demand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VOD systems either "stream" content, allowing viewing while the video is being downloaded, or "download" it in which the program is brought in its entirely to a set-top box before viewing starts.
All download and some streaming video on demand systems provide the user with a large subset of VCR functionality including pause, fast forward, fast rewind, slow forward, slow rewind, jump to previous/future frame etc. For streaming systems this requires more effort on the part of the server, and may also require greater network bandwidth.
Near video on demand (NVOD) is a pay-per-view consumer video technique used by multi-channel broadcasters using high-bandwidth distribution mechanisms such as satellite and cable television.

The problem with video on demand is that users can start streaming a movie at an arbitrary moment, so if there are 100 users all starting to watch some new movie at about 8 P.M., chances are that no two will start at exactly the same instant so they cannot share a stream.
In a sense, video on demand is like using a taxi: you call it and it comes.

For our purposes, we assume that advanced video services provide, at the least, some minimal level of interactivity, since this is the underlying theme of almost all advanced video services from games to video on demand.
NVOD would make these movies available every 15 minutes or so; however, typical VCR functionalities such as pause, rewind, and fast forward would not be available.
NVOD, or at least "near" NVOD, is already available in the form of DBS to roughly half of all households.

Near video on demand capability, while desirable to customers, does not provide customers all the instant control features of true video on demand.
In a true video on demand system, movies are typically striped across multiple disks for the purpose of load balancing.
For near video on demand, however, the input/output (I/O) workload for a movie is determined solely by the broadcast interval, not by viewer demand (instances of request).

In NVoD systems, on the other hand, limited continuity in VCR actions can be provided by caching a small amount of video data (e.g., 5 minutes' worth of video) in a buffer located close to the client, for instance, in the customers' premise equipment (CPE).
Support for continuous interactive functions in NVoD is provided by caching a limited amount of video data close to the user, for instance, in a CPE buffer, so that the user may access it with a very low latency during interaction [2].
Video frames are received in a synchronous fashion, and those frames already displayed (``past frames'') are kept within the buffer, for reverse search and rewind capability.

Video on Demand (VoD) enables subscribers to choose from a library of recorded films and TV programming, and watch them immediately on their TV set, usually via a set-top box.
Providing a limited set of video streams which are defined and scheduled in advance is quite different from allowing users to select any one of a large number of videos at a time of their own choosing.
And while nVoD can be offered by digital satellite or cable, true VoD is only possible over a service which can provide the end-user with their own dedicated broadband channel, all the way from the video server to the set-top box.

As cable television system operators continue to upgrade their networks to support 2-way digital transmission, they are well-positioned to offer interactive services such as Video on Demand (VoD), interactive TV, and other rich content services.
At the distribution hubs the MPEG-2 video streams are extracted from IP packets and passed to a QAM device that transmits the VoD to the subscriber's Set Top Box (STB) over a VoD channel.
This solution provides guaranteed bandwidth per service type (video, voice, or data) and ensures that admission to the network will be granted only to service flows whose QoS requirements can be satisfied by the IP network.

So far, consumers can pay for movies on demand from independent companies -- such as DivXNetworks, Intertainer and In Demand -- but there isn't one place where people can pay for all their media entertainment.
Creating an on-demand delivery system comes at the right time as well, since digital entertainment companies have focused on developing the technology to deliver music to consumers over the Internet over the last several years.
The problem for consumers is that many video companies want to sell movies on demand and subscription television services through their own websites.

But this fall's planned retail introduction of personal video recorder systems from TiVo and Replay TV has touched off fierce debate within the industry over what type of VOD services consumers really want and the best way to implement them.
Proponents of the new TiVo and Replay systems maintain that current near-video-on-demand technology--essentially a lot of channels of pay-per-view--in conjunction with their digital set-top recorders will give consumers the functional equivalent of video-on-demand at little or no extra cost to cable operators.
That level of flexibility, they claim, will be more valuable to consumers than a fixed library of movies and other programs stored in a server computer maintained by their cable operator.
