Nearshoring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nearshoring or "nearshore outsourcing," is a concept for the form of outsourcing in which business processes are relocated to locations which are, generally, cheaper and yet geographically nearer.
Nearshoring can also be ranged against offshoring or offshore outsourcing, which imply relocation of business processes to cheaper locations, typically quite far from the parent location.
Major nearshoring destinations for US businesses are Mexico and Canada, and in Western Europe, include Ireland, Eastern Europe and the Maghreb.

Nearshoring: Looking closer to home   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nearshoring involves outsourcing work to companies with the economic benefits of an offshore location, but a closer cultural, linguistic and geographic fit with the user organisation.
Linguistic skills are an obvious driver for nearshore contracts, but not all considerations are as clear cut, says Ian Marriott, vice-president of research at analyst firm Gartner.
The range of different models that can be attached to a nearshoring operation brings flexibility to companies who want to streamline their operations without incurring too much risk.

Processor Editorial Article - Nearshoring Picks Up Steam   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nearshoring, the practice of sending work to nearby countries instead of overseas, continues to gain momentum in the United States as companies discover that countries such as Canada, Mexico, and Ireland can be smart choices for affordable, reliable outsourcing.
To offshoring companies, nearshoring doesn't appear to be a threat, partially due to the integration of their operations into nearshoring countries.
And though the cost savings with nearshoring can be significant for U.S. companies, at present it's not vast enough to cause panic among domestic companies looking to keep work at home—at least not any more panic than is already caused by offshoring.

BPOs tap into nearshoring wave- The Economic Times   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nearshore outsourcing is seen as the practice that may solve all the challenges that these companies are facing when they are outsourcing their work to distant locations like India, China and other south east Asian countries.
Nearshore outsourcing is the practice of getting work done or services performed by people in neighboring countries rather than in your own country.
A major share of this is expected to go to nearshoring, a forecast that throws open a challenge and an opportunity for the Indian BPO sector.

Another benefit of nearshoring proximity is the ability to build trusted relationships with decreased risk of linguistic or cultural misunderstandings.
Nearshore centers, like offshore facilities, upgrade their technologies in order to better collaborate with their nearshore partner.
Most nearshore partners tend to come with a more robust technology offering than offshore partners, thus the need to purchase, enhance or build is less than what may typically be true with an offshore partner.

Global Outsourcing : Offshore Locations : Nearshoring Regains Interest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nearshoring, despite being an old phenomenon, is forcing companies, both big and small, to take a fresh look at their strategies and opt for it.
Nearshoring, as we know, was restricted to time insensitive tasks such as manufacturing, IT application development, remittance processing, medical transcription, and outbound tele-services in the past.
Nearshoring, as has been said earlier, is not a new phenomenon, but given the impressive list of companies looking at these new European destinations, one is forced to think why there is a renewed interest in nearshoring.

With nearshoring, organizations have the benefit of outsourcing operations offsite, but in a way that is convenient — physically, culturally, managerially and financially — to the overall business.

In many cases, the nearshore partner is transparent to you because they are a subcontractor to your onshore outsourcing partner.

This is the principle behind nearshoring, a form of sending operations offsite to nations closer (both culturally and geographically) to the source nation.
With nearshoring, the benefit of proximity is more than just working in the same, or close, time zone.
For small projects that require close interaction with the company and its outsourcing partner, nearshoring is an excellent solution with less expensive travel costs and shortened travel time as an added benefit.

Nearshoring shores up channel support - Computeract!ve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nearshoring is becoming increasingly popular as firms look to move their call centres to Europe, rather than the Far East or South Africa, according to analyst firm Datamonitor.
"Nearshoring will increase in importance, which is good news for the channel because these centres will need to be multi-modal, capable of handling email and instant messaging as well as phone calls."
Ryan added that having contact centres in eastern Europe is an opportunity for resellers to branch out into other countries, either by partnering with local resellers in countries such as Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic, or buying one outright.

The report demonstrates that, when all of the critical economic factors such as wage inflation, productivity, and management overhead are considered, in many situations nearshoring to domestic U.S. locations can provide savings that are comparable to -- or even better than -- those available from offshoring to developing nations.
This begs the question, "What determines whether relocating offshore will meet with success or failure?" KLG has found that the answer lies in understanding precisely which functions are suitable for moving offshore.
Prior to making a decision to move these types of high-end functions offshore, companies should carefully evaluate whether nearshoring may be a more advantageous strategy.

 'Nearshoring': Sort of like next-dooring
Looking to slow the trend of offshoring jobs, high-tech and other business leaders are exploring the idea of making Arizona and its neighboring Mexican state a hub for "nearshoring." That's the term for setting up operations and jobs just across the border instead of sending them overseas.
The idea recalls the effort to build maquiladoras that began in the 1960s, but with an important difference: Instead of low-cost, high-volume factories that churn out simple products, the new operations would produce low volumes of more complex ones, though at a lower cost than in the United States.
If a company is going to consider offshoring, backers of nearshoring say, executives ought to look at doing their knowledge-based manufacturing and software development in Sonora and managing the operations and customer relationships from Arizona.

David on IT Outsourcing in China: May 2004
Nearshoring "provides a viable alternative for companies hesitant to move their entire work offshore or for those who are unwilling to bear the high cost of onsite work." According to an EVP with Cognizant, this seems to hold true especially for large or mission-critical projects requiring 24x7 responsiveness.
However, it should be noted that the fully-burdened costs for nearshoring may be three times as much as offshoring (using India as the base, so figure six-to-ten times as much as offshoring in China).
However, Canada may represent a viable nearshoring destination, especially for clients easily served by Canadian firms (e.g., U.S. clients, either end users or SIs, in the northern U.S. or easily served by a nonstop flight from a major Canadian airport, such as LAX or SFO).

 Offshoring closer to home
Nearshoring, outsourcing work to service providers in neighboring countries, isn't a new idea, but analyst say the concept has attracted more attention in the last year or so because it is seen as less risky - and less politically charged - than sending jobs overseas to places such as India and the Philippines.
Analysts say nearshoring should be part of any corporation's global sourcing strategy, which pushes out projects to domestic outsourcers, offshore providers and nearshore locations according to business demands.
The trend of nearshoring is growing, says David Tapper, program manager of IT outsourcing and utility services and global offshore services at IDC.
