The Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State, sitting as a board, shall have power to remit fines and forfeitures and to grant respites, reprieves, pardons, or commutations in all cases of conviction for offenses against the laws of the state, except treason and cases of impeachment.
CVII-4 The State Board of Education shall appoint and fix the compensation of the Commissioner of Education, who shall be the executive officer of the State Board of Education and the administrative head of the State Department of Education, and who shall have such powers and duties as the Legislature may direct.
Whenever the state is so redistricted the members elected prior to the redistricting shall continue in office, and the law providing for such redistricting shall where necessary specify the newly established district which they shall represent for the balance of their term.

The State Bureau of Vital Statistics and the office of the clerk of the district court where the divorce was granted have divorce records not available at the Society.
Researchers are encouraged to contact the state historical society or archives of the state in which their ancestors lived.

Michigan is the eighth state in the nation and the first in the Midwest to report a human West Nile case this summer.

The Golden State Museum is also the name of a new museum slated to open in late 1998 at the California State Archives in Sacramento.
Tennesseans sometimes are referred to as “Volunteers,”“Big Benders” and “Butternuts.” The first two are derived from the nickname of the state, while the tag of “Butternuts” was first applied to Tennessee soldiers during the War Between the States because of the tan color of their uniforms.
The beehive was chosen as the emblem for the provisional State of Deseret in 1848 and was maintained on the seal of the State of Utah when Utah became a state in 1896.

Johanns said big crowds at State Fair Park mean "people have rediscovered their state fair" and that 120,000 young Nebraskans in 4-H, "one of the all-time great mentoring programs," was one reason to vote for revenue to sustain the fair.
Nebraska has the largest 4-H participation per capita in the nation.

Flocks of nasty monsters from Mars who smashed down into the state of New Jersey and proceeded to "wipe out" civilization until they caught colds and died gave the public a pre-Halloween chill Sunday night.
One bewildered gentleman wanted to know if The Journal had heard anything "about a piece of the planet Mars breaking off and coming down and hitting the world." The police, the newspapers and the broadcasting stations did their best to calm the citizenry.
It finally got so bad in New Jersey that the state police put reassuring messages on the state teletype, instructing their officers what it was all about.

Green, who served as a judge in Michigan for 35 years, died May 11 in Colorado at the age of 83.
Green was the oldest of five boys growing up on a farm in Nebraska, said his daughter Melanie Humphrey.
He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage, and took almost 40 trips to the country - many with his family and grandchildren.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's "Market Journal" and "Backyard Farmer" programs will be featured at the 2005 Nebraska State Fair Sept. 5.
"Market Journal" will offer several educational and instructional events and "Backyard Farmer" will offer a question and answer panel, said Jim Randall, coordinator of electronic media in the Communications and Information Technology unit in the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Both programs will be delivered on the presentation stage in Agricultural Hall at Nebraska State Fair Park and can be seen live and will be archived online at WebVideo.unl.edu.
