Nebraska (album) - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Nebraska is the sixth album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1982 (see 1982 in music).
The album begins with "Nebraska", a first-person narrative by a serial killer (based loosely on Charles Starkweather) and ends with "Reason to Believe", a complex narration that renders its title phrase into contemptuous sarcasm.
Indeed Nebraska ended up being one of the most well-reviewed records in his catalog, and Springsteen returned to somewhat recapture the sound and feel of it on later recordings such as The Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils and Dust.

"Nebraska" was about that American isolation: what happens to people when they're alienated from their friends and their community and their government and their job.
And it was all the 'Nebraska' songs, except for 'My Father's House.' And the tape had many other 'Nebraska'-style songs, performed in the 'Nebraska'-style.
It is also a fact that he at least partially wrote "Open All Night" in late 1980, as during one of the Madison Square Garden shows of December 1980 he changed key in the middle of "Ramrod" and sang 2 lines from it right before the final guitar solos.

After The River became Bruce's first number one album, "Hungry Heart" became his first top ten song and a hugely successful world tour, one would expect his next album to be in a similar vein to keep up the momentum.
Bruce would explore dark subjects on later albums ("Born In The USA" was original recorded for this album), but he never recorded them in such a bare and stark nature.
The story of "Nebraska" is well-known to Springsteen fans as he slipped this brooding, low-tech solo album in between two blockbuster sets with the E Street Band, "The River" and "Born in the USA".

The songs on NEBRASKA form a bleak cycle about men on the run, from the law, from their fathers or from themselves, usually for reasons even they don't understand.
This was songwriting that channeled both Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams, and the stark sound of NEBRASKA was not merely a homage to them, but a perfect casing for these tales.

Still, it was in the bleak character studies of 1982's Nebraska that he reaffirmed himself as a literate everyman steeped in the tradition of John Steinbeck and Flannery O'Connor, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan.
The "Nebraska" album is a Springsteen watershed: haunting (downright scary at times), provocative, and a complete aural u-turn from its fine predecessor, "The River." Perhaps I expected too much from this "tribute" lineup; sure, the songs are solid but they uniformly lack the charisma that Bruce Springsteen so naturally brings to them.
However, the makers of Badlands decide not to finish the album as they think Springsteen might have (that album might have garnered 5 stars), but to offer their own interpretations.
