Known as the Great Central Wisconsin Swamp, the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge was converted from drained farmland back to its original habitat type of marshland and open water.
Necedah is a Winnebago Indian word meaning "land of yellow waters." It refers to the tawny, yellow water, stained by minerals in the soil, which drains into the Wisconsin River approximately seven miles east of the refuge.
Wisconsin's holdings are a vital link in this system, providing important services to wildlife, people, and the habitats which support them.

 Necedah, WI--Historical Overview
The name "Necedah" comes from the Ho Chunk peoples who inhabited the area before the arrival of european settlers and means "Land of the Yellow Waters", a reference to the Yellow River.
In 1848 the land was "ceded" to the U.S. government and Thomas Weston and J.T. Kingston arrived in the area and, as was the custom, staked claims by "blazing" a tree on either side of the river and carving their names and date on them.
Whooping cranes have been brought to the Necedah Wildlife Refuge for the specific purpose of developing a secondary migratory flock in the eastern half of the United States.

The wetland, water, and Native American heritage is reflected in the word Necedah, a Ho-Chunk word meaning "land of yellow waters." Europeans first settled the Refuge area in the early 1700s; their activities consisted primarily of logging.
