Ryan's Head: Evil is a Necessary Evil
Evil has no face, is difficult to define, and impossible to trace to its origin.
As human beings choose evil they eventually lose the ability to properly discern good from evil, yet their acts are still good or evil because they exist apart from man's perception.
To say that evil does not exist as an entity I suppose is technically correct, but Satan exists as the most evil being in existence.

So it may well be that evil on the Indian silver screen is not really dead, nor yet sleeping, but merely altered.

Theory:The Necessary Evil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In that sense, the pursuit of epistemological and similar questions in the philosophy of social science is evil.
When intellectual specialties reach a size sufficient to support specialization (this is one of those demographic facts I spoke of earlier) they often (and in the social sciences almost invariably) develop specialties in theory and methodology and philosophy of science (as it applies to their particular discipline).
That includes, to bring this down to some earthy and necessary considerations, the people who pay for what is done and the people who are the objects (or subjects, since what term we use to describe these people is contested) of our study.

BOPnews: Comment on The Stupidity of Evil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
I believe that a bit more care now will avoid the next necessary evil, because for every evil there is a moment before which it is necessary, and that means, at very least that some lesser necessary evil would do the job.
Next, Ian made the statement that attacking a country that didn't attack you is evil, I was simply pointing out that by that definition the bombing of Serbia would be considered evil when plainly it was not.
And then there is a special kind of human evil, a highly distilled form of evil, the flest, blindest and most banally stupid form of evil in the entire cosmos -- and that is institutional human evil.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
If so, Burke’s sentence seems to be saying that all good men must be active in resisting a particular evil, and this, unless the activity were seen as a definition of goodness, is so unlikely to take place that one would expect the triumph of the evil to be guaranteed.
But in the first it is possible for good men to do something while evil still triumphs, and in the second it is possible for good men to do nothing and for evil still to fail to triumph.
Burke will use the words ‘good’ and ‘evil’, but he never reduces politics to the primitive level of describing his side as the good people and his opponents as the forces of evil they have to combat.

They progressively lead the alcoholic (the drunkard or inebriate in temperance terms) to a total collapse of ordinary values and life structure and the ultimate depredations of death, the insane asylum, or prison.

The Continental Army was at a remove from those fierce motives.
