Necker Island (Hawaiian: Mokumanamana) is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, 13 km (8 miles) north of the Tropic of Cancer, located at 23°34′N 164°42′W.
It is part of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, located 690 km (430 miles) northwest of Honolulu, and is part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge within the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Monument.
Necker Island is between 41 to 45 acres (170,000 to 180,000 m²) and is rocky with steep sides and very little soil.

Necker Island (Mokumanamana) is a precipitation, narrow ridge of volcanic rock, about 1,300 yards long, east and west, by a tenth as wide.
This famous French navigator sailed within a third of a league of the island on his passage westward, noting the perpendicular cliffs, white with the droppings of birds, the absence of trees, and the violence of the sea, which made it impossible to land.
Officially Necker Island is part of the City and County of Honolulu, it having been one of the islands acquired by the United States from the Republic of Hawaii, July 7, 1898.

This enigmatic head and torso is one of a group of eleven stone figures discovered in 1894 on Necker Island, a barren outcrop of rock 300 miles northwest of the Hawai'ian islands.

For as long as I can remember, the islands of the Pacific have held a particular fascination for me. In the early 1980s I became intrigued by the status, possibilities and future of the tiny island nation of Nauru in the Central Pacific.
Faced with a dwindling, despoiled land mass, the Goverment of Nauru was at the time seriously exploring the possiblities of acquiring an island in the Pacific sufficent for both present and future population.
The main difficulty surrounding this enterprise was that all of the islands in the Pacific were owned or at least claimed by one government or another.
