Engineering strain, e, is defined as the ratio of increase in length of line to original length.
The horizontal axis is the smallest engineering strain in the plane of the sheet or the minor strain e
The strain at the onset of localized necking (failure points in the diagram) is poltted as a function of the minor strain (H-19).

 Engineering Stress-strain Curve
The engineering tension test is widely used to provide basic design information on the strength of materials and as an acceptance test for the specification of materials.
The strain used for the engineering stress-strain curve is the average linear strain, which is obtained by dividing the elongation of the gage length of the specimen, d, by its original length.
Since the engineering stress-strain curve often is quite flat in the vicinity of necking, it may be difficult to establish the strain at maximum load without ambiguity.

Localized necking occurs when the stress state leads to an increase in the surface area of the sheet at the cost of a reduction in the thickness.
There are two kinds of neck, i.e., the diffuse neck (so called because its extension is much greater than the sheet thickness), and the localized necking (through thickness thinning), which is terminated by final separation or fracture.
As early as in 1952, Swift [1952] developed a criterion for predicting the onset of diffuse necking with the assumption that plastic instability occurs at a load maximum for proportional loading.

Necking doesn't help with those unless it's on the anotomy major down the hall.
The "engineering stress" is the force divided by the original cross sectional area.
Necking is when the material gets skinnier in the middle.

The neck is the part of the body on many limbed vertebrates that distinguishes the head from the torso or trunk.
The clavicle or collar-bone forms the lower limit of the neck, and laterally the outward slope of the neck to the shoulder is caused by the trapezius muscle.

This is an important concept in engineering, especially in the fields of material science, mechanical engineering and structural engineering.
When necking becomes substantial, it may cause a reversal of the engineering stress-strain curve, where decreasing stress correlates to increasing strain because of geometric effects.
This is because the engineering stress and engineering strain are calculated assuming the original cross-sectional area before necking.

DeGarmo - Chapter 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
At necking the load carrying capacity starts to decrease (load carrying ability decreases, strength which is a stress continues to increase).
The onset of necking can be associated with the start of decreasing stress on the engineering stress-engineering strain plot.
Since there is a relation between engineering strain and true strain, the true strain at necking can be found if the engineering strain at necking is known.

A critical review of some existing criteria for diffuse necking in sheet metals is given.
In this paper, a generalization of the existing diffuse necking criteria for materials that can be described by Hill's new normally anisotropic yield function is presented.
It predicts a significant effect of Hill's yield surface shape factor on the critical principal strain in the range of negative minor strains while in the range of biaxial tension this influence is small.

Starting with the simple jet and plume models of Morton, Taylor and Turner (1956), time dependent models have been developed which show the effect of temporal variation of the buoyancy flux at the boundary where plumes or puffs are formed.
It is shown that reducing the buoyancy flux at the source of a plume causes a transitional `necking' region to form in the plume.
The necking region has lower buoyancy closer to the origin and higher buoyancy further away.

For a specimen with gradient in toughness along its length, for example a transverse-weld specimen the neck is expected to initiate at the section least resistant to microvoid growth.

In mechanical engineering, necking is a mode of ductile flow of material in tension.
Examples of necking can be seen by axially and oppositely stretching Silly Putty or pulling a plastic grocery bag.
This technique is also used in the wire-making industry where, by pulling on a thicker length of wire, it becomes thinner, longer, and more ductile.

The Society of Rheology: 72nd Annual Meeting (Feb 2001) Paper EF1
However, little strain-hardening is obtained and observations show that the filament fails at moderate strains by a necking instability.
By contrast, chain stretching and pronounced strain-hardening are observed in all the unentangled fluids which prevents filament necking, but ultimately leads to an elastic endplate instability.
The onset of chain stretching in semi-dilute and concentrated entangled polymer solutions occurs at very high deformation rates and can be identified by the onset of strain-hardening and by the visual detection of transition from necking failure to elastic end-plate instability.

 -Plastics Engineering FAQ - Eng-Tips
This alignment or orientation causes the molecules to come closer together and results in a lessening of the free volume.
This phenomenon is commonly viewed as “necking” or yielding in a test specimen, when the center of the specimen begins to “thin” as a result of extensional alignment.
Slippage releases the stress on those molecules that can actually move (as well as those that it might have been “pulling” on), but that slippage correspondingly increases the load on those entangled or restrained chains that cannot relieve the stress.

Such fluids exhibit much less significant strain-hardening than is typically observed in dilute and semi-dilute solutions such as Boger fluids, and the need for comparison between experimental observation and numerical calculation of the resulting fluid dynamics is correspondingly greater.
The onset of pronounced filament necking during the imposed elongation and the time to breakup following cessation of stretching are both found to be sensitive functions of the transient extensional viscosity and the magnitude of strain-hardening in the test fluid.
Finite element calculations provide good agreement with the experiments and also with a one-dimensional slender filament theory for break-up of a viscoelastic fluid column.
