Travel Greece :: Necromanteion - Greek Oracle of the Dead Underworld of Hades
I am on my way to visit the Oracle of the Dead, the Necromanteion, a mystical sanctuary that the ancient Greeks believed to be the entrance to the Underworld.
The Necromanteion near the beautiful town of Parga on Greece's west coast, belonged to the ancient Bronze Age city of Ephyra, the ruins of which are located nearby.
After this discovery, the Necromanteion was destroyed and lay hidden until it was excavated in 1958 and restored by the Archaeological Society of Athens.

Acheron translates as "river of woe" and believed to be a branch of the underworld river Acheron over which in ancient Greek mythology Charon ferried the newly dead souls across into Hades.
The lake called Acherousia and the river still called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion are found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu.
Another branch of Acheron was belived to surface at the Acherusian cape (now Eregli in Turkey) and was seen by the Argonauts according to Apollonius of Rhodes.

The site had been inhabited since Mycenaean times judging from the finding of several shards and a bronze sword dating to the 13th century BC.
During Roman times, in 167 BC, the Oracle was proven to be a hoax when pulleys were discovered in the chamber, which apparently had been used to hoist up the priests who simulated the departed and answered the questions of the pilgrims.
The walk through the hallucinogenic smoke of the labyrinth, the isolation and rituals they had performed during their stay, prepared them for accepting the appearance of the "dead" person as "real." After this discovery, the Necromanteion was destroyed and lay hidden until it was excavated in 1958 and restored by the Archaeological Society of Athens.

 A Cultural Route (Part 8)
On a hill near the Acheron are the remains of the Necromanteion (Oracle of the Dead) at Ephyra, a sanctuary visited by the ancient Greeks who wanted to consult the dead, via the priests, about the future.
Today one can visit the Necromanteion and the sources of the Acheron, either by taking a small boat up the river from its mouth or travelling along its banks by road.
One hour's drive from the Necromanteion are the wellpreserved ruins of Nicopolis, a Roman city built in the first century AD by the Emperor Octavian to commemorate his victory at Actium in 31 BC, over Mark Anthony and Cleopatra.

Two daily local buses cover the coastal route to Préveza from AMMOUDHIÁ, a surprisingly unspoilt little beach-resort 5km due west of the Necromanteion at the mouth of the Ahérondas.
By the roundabout at the entrance to the village is a worthwhile visitor information centre (daily except Sun according to staff whim; free), whose intelligent, non-jingoistic exhibits highlight the unique ecology of the river and its marshes, as well as the history and ethnology of Soúli.
The Ahérondas meets (and cools) the sea here, bounding the village on the south; the quay is packed with fishing boats and excursion boats for the jaunt upriver to the Necromanteion, and lined with most of Ammoudhiá's tavernas and cafés.

Is there any safe parallel for this sort of device (which would tend to support rationalist theories of ancient oracles)?
