Its appetite knew no bounds and only with desperate pledges of servitude were the Necrontyr able to convince the creature they had summoned forth that there were yet more races beyond their world that could be feasted upon - species beyond number for it to destroy.

The Necrontyr discovered a race of star-born entities who lived in the very suns that caused their home world and those around it so much damage, and seeing in them an ultimate way to destroy the Old Ones they began to worship these 'Star Gods' or C'tan in their own language.

Soon almost nothing remained of the ancient race of the Necrontyr, and all that stood it in its place was the mechanical servants of the C'tan, the Necrons.

Relic Forums - What are the Old ones?
The necrontyr were deliberatedly created on a planet that for some reason (i think because it orbited a star with a massive gravitational pull) gave them a very short lifespan, but this in turn made them advance extremely quickly.
However when the old ones revealed themselves to the Necrontyr they were despised, the Necrontyr hated the old ones for being immortal when they died after just a few years.
So when the big war with the Ctan and the Old Ones broke out, the Necrontyr sided with the Ctan, who gave turned them into immortal necrons in return for their devotion.

No—she would be a nun, and in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, nuns are Sisters of Battle.
As for the lack of obviously “female” Tau models, perhaps they cannot be recognised beneath their heavy armour or perhaps they are visually indistinguishable from males (like other species of animals).
It is true that the focus of Warhammer 40K lies heavily with the Space Marines, and I myself once said that the game might well be called “Marinehammer 40,000.” But in this case, claiming that females are overlooked is not totally fair.

I'm thinking the stuff like Necrontyr and the stuff attached to various races, but not having their own actual army(outside of conversions) should probably not be mentioned alongside the "Army" races in the listings.
I disagree - they are similar enough that they should both stay at Orc (Warhammer) - the spelling difference is explained in the article.

No, it was a deal of: you give us immortality, and we'll kill some slimy space frogs (old ones/slaan) and the sex toys (space elfs/eldar) for you.
The Necrontyr worshipped the C'tan as gods so I think it was the C'tan that were making most of the demands in the bargain.
It would seem the necrons cant be as threatening as has been made out: If the necrontyr where limited to one race on one planet (or one sysem even) there cant be very many of them, at least compared to orcs and humans, let allone 'nids.
