  Phish :: T.M.I.P.H.
A Picture of Nectar was Phish's major label debut album and was mostly finished by the time the band entered their record deal with Elektra Records.
By February, A Picture of Nectar was ready for release and the band had commenced recording Crimes of The Mind with The Dude.
Nectar Rorris, the proprietor, was happy to give us a gig despite our lack of experience, organization, or a song list long enough to last two sets.

 PHISH Rift review by Gianthogweed
This was Phish's sixth album and fourth officially released.
Although their are elements of prog on all of their albums, I wouldn't categorize any save maybe The Story of the Ghost, as prog.
The album is very well structured and reminiscent of Gentle Giant in some respects.

 Tindersticks Album Reviews
Formed in England in 1992, the Tindersticks’ debut album is an amazingly ambitious 21 track affair, and very surprisingly for an album of such length, every single track is of a high quality, with absolutely no filler whatsoever.
This second album may not be quite the masterpiece the first album was, but it comes a very close second.
It’s less soulful than the previous couple of albums, yet much softer than their earlier works and the change of vocalists works to give variety to the album and lightens the atmosphere.

In the Hindu religion, Hanuman is Lord Rama's greatest devotee, known to be both a fierce warrior and immeasurably humble.
NECTAR opens with "Radha Remix", a whirl of electronic vibraphones and chant in honour of Krishna's companion, while the following track, "Opening the Gates", is a somber meditation on the names of Ram and Sita.
One of the album's finest tracks is the mournful "Sita Ram/Raghupati", the latter part of which emphasises the oneness of all religions, and was Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan.

After Rift, the album that followed Nectar, Phish began to alternate studio and live releases, which may help to explain why their later studio releases lack the joy and experimentalism of their early and live material.
Nectar is, without a doubt, Phish's lightest and most self-aware album, both lyrically and musically.
Though some of their concert albums can be quite good, Phish really suffers in the studio setting due to the balance to both appease their fans, critics, and casual mainstream listeners.

It was released on February 12, 1992, and was Phish's major-label debut, appearing on Elektra Records.
The album title "A Picture of Nectar" comes from the name of the club owner Nectar Rorris who owned Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont where Phish played many of their first live shows.
The album was certified gold by the RIAA on November 15, 2001.

Featuring three ex-members of the Teenbeat group the Ropers, Nectar is a collection of catchy power pop with a nice use of strings.
The music is upbeat and sunny for the most part, and shows an occasional tendency to dissolve into drone, but the spaceyness of the Ropers isn't really present.
The band tries to achieve that peak with the assorted hooks and fine melodies that pervade the record, but are never quite able to hit that high again.

Born in Statesboro, Georgia, Brooks took up the guitar at age 10 (he had been playing violin since the age of 3) and had a hunger for music that was never satisfied.
He crept into his older brother's rooms, when they were away, and secretly listened to their albums: Hendrix, Tuna, Yes, Clapton and Morrison, to name a few.
Critics and writers hail Brooks "an acoustic guitar god'" and a "fret monster," saying his music is "electrifying," "dazzling," and "breathtaking," and that he sings like the "Angel of Soul." With millions of touring miles and thirteen albums to his credit, the fans have seen and heard it for themselves.

Phish's third album (I gather) is a complicated affair for someone unfamiliar to the band - and this is my case.
Most of the songs on this album are very typical of Phish swaying from Country-rock to bluesish-rock to mainstream rock with good musicianship.
Overall, this album is less proggy than their previous three, but still a great album and the next logical step once you have Junta and Lawn Boy.

The riffs are similar to progressive, but Opeth also has death vocals mixed with clean ones and acoustic guitars, plus on top of that the whole album has a dark atmosphere that surrounds the listener each time he/she listens to it.
The whole album consists of five wonderful songs and from those songs comes that unbeliavable energy that Opeth has as a progressive/death metal band.
Mostly long songs (in this album, we can say every song is long, the shortest is 10 minutes!), in which some riffs, which usually repeat for quite a while, make the music and don't follow the typical structure that other songs have.

Phish's second major-label album (third overall) raised their public profile considerably; by 1992, roughly similar bands like the Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler, and Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit were getting noticed, and Phish's loopy take on the nascent jam-band subculture slotted right in.
However, by the time of A PICTURE OF NECTAR, Phish was making it clear that there was no other band like them.
That sense of songcraft is evident on A PICTURE OF NECTAR, especially on the tightly constructed pop songs "Chalk Dust Torture" and "Poor Heart".

On this album, they play a series of original instrumental compositions inspired by French and Low Country folk music and developed along a more improvisational line.
Sometimes the improvisation is pronounced, as on "Kuierje." The piece begins as both accordions play what appears to be a simple repeating folk line until bassist Baumgarten gets to his solo.

Phish made a signifigant transition professionally with A Picture Of Nectar, the group's third album, as they began to understand the difference between a studio recording and a live performance.
By reigning in their jammy tendencies significantly and further exploring the rock end of their sound, the band produced a group of eclectic songs that are thoughtfully crafted.
The highlights of this album -- songs like "Llama," "Guelah Papyrus," and even the Latin-tinged instrumental "Landlady" -- are short and to the point; they provide the foundation for the record.
