The shops have had a standard loyalty card for some time, but the new scheme, introduced, according to the Co-op, to remind people that there is an alternative to the grocery giants, brings together all parts of the operation.
Loyalty schemes come in two main forms: those linked to spending at particular retailers, such as the Boots Advantage card and Tesco Clubcard; and those linked to credit cards, which allocate points whenever the cards are used.
Nectar says that £800m worth of points have been cashed in by customers since the scheme was launched in 2002 - although it does not reveal the number that remain uncashed.

Some £460m racked up on loyalty cards is never redeemed, mainly because customers are not aware they have collected points, or forget to use those they have already accrued, according to research from the consultancy International Customer Loyalty Programmes (ICLP).
Add in promotions with free points and double points, and "double dipping" (when you use a credit card that is part of the scheme to buy goods already carrying points) and it becomes fiendishly difficult to work out which loyalty card offers the best all-round value.

Store loyalty card Nectar has revealed plans to move a chunk of its UK customer service operations to India later this year.
Nectar gives shoppers points every time they make a purchase at the likes of BP, Debenhams and Sainsbury's and allows them to redeem the points at a later date in part payment for goods.
Nectar is owned by Loyalty Management UK (LMUK), which outsources the customer service call centre operation in Newcastle to a company called Sitel.

Most Supermarkets have some type of loyalty schemes operating, with TESCO I use Clubcard, Tesco along with other retailers offer NECTAR points, the advantage of course is you can shop at stores who might be in competition with each other and collect points, more difficult with a supermarket charge card.
The cards can be a little fiddly at the checkout (you can get key ring fobs as well).

Regular readers will know that Barclaycard's decision to bail out of Nectar (or Nectar's decision to ditch Barclaycard - both sides seem to be claiming they did the dumping) on August 31, infuriated many Barclaycard holders.
Some are so angry they are cancelling their cards, now that they are no longer able to earn Nectar points.
