  Sun-bird - LoveToKnow 1911
Graceful in form and active in motion, sun-birds flit from flower to flower, feeding on small insects which are attracted by the nectar and on the nectar itself; but this is usually done while perched and rarely on the wing as is the habit of humming-birds.
The Nectariniidae form the subject of a sumptuous Monograph by G. Shelley (4to, London, 1876-1880), in the coloured plates of which full justice is done to the varied beauties which these gloriously arrayed little beings display, while almost every available source of information has been consulted and the results embodied.
According to E. Layard, the habits of the Cape Promerops, its mode of nidification, and the character of its eggs are very unlike those of the ordinary Nectariniidae.

Like the unrelated New World hummingbirds, to which sunbirds are often compared, sunbirds have long and slender, highly curved bills, tube-shaped tongues, and feed primarily on nectar and small insects.
Both sexes build the nest and share incubation of the two to three eggs laid per clutch.
Sunbirds and their relatives are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Nectariniidae.

 Song of the Sunbirds
While both groups bear no relationship to each other,(sunbirds are songbirds, hummingbirds are not) there are similarities that simply cannot be ignored.
Sunbirds (Passeriformes Nectariniidae) feed on nectar and small insects just like hummingbirds, but they like to sit down either on, or next to the flower that happens to be the meal of the moment.
Hummingbirds almost always eat while their wings are continuing to beat the air, enabling them to hover motionless above the flower.

 Sunbird page
There is no "family book" of which I'm aware yet published, but a book entitled "Sunbirds: a Guide to the Sunbirds, Flowerpeckers, Spiderhunters and Sugarbirds of the Word" by B. Cheke, O. Mann, and R. Allen is advertised for "spring 2000." Neither the Birds of Africa series (Brown et al.
1982) nor the Handbook of the Birds of World series has yet reached the Nectariniidae, but I look forward to each.
Accordingly, my discussion here is more "thrown together" from bits and pieces I know than it is based upon serious literature.
