'Ned Kelly' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
Ned Kelly is Australia's most famous outlaw, a 19th century Irish immigrants' son who resisted British colonial oppression and became a folk hero celebrated in books, plays, operas, paintings, reenactments, even the 2000 Sydney Olympics and films, with Mick Jagger playing Kelly in Tony Richardson's dis-astrously arty 1970 version.
Kelly and his mother (Kris McQuade) are unjustly charged with attempted murder of the cop, although he could be cleared if the wife (Naomi Watts) of an English landowner would come forward, but that would reveal she had been in a compromising situation with him at the time in question.
Kelly and his sidekick Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom) and their gang, which includes Ned's brother Dan (Laurence Kinlan) and their friend Steve Hart (Philip Barantini) are as dashing as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and their Hole in the Wall Gang, but they don't have as much fun.

For those unversed in down-under outlaws, Ned Kelly was the bank robber who, along with his gang, achieved folk-hero eminence by stealing from the rich and giving to Australia’s poor before an intensive manhunt led to his famed showdown with British colonial police and his execution in 1880.

The antagonist takes the form of Francis Hare (Geoffrey Rush), the hard-line superintendent pursuing the Kelly gang, and he’s indicative of the film’s main shortcoming — the one-dimensional presentation of the characters as either noble, in the case of the Kelly clan and its sympathizers, or horrid, as with the brutal lawmen.

Though the mythology surrounding Ned Kelly is as important to Australians as that of Jesse James is to Americans, he's hardly a household name anywhere else, so producer-director Tony Richardson shrewdly gambled on casting rock star Mick Jagger to tell the story of the 19th century bushranger in this Down Under Western.

Kelly and his gang (among them the dismal Orlando "always the bridesmaid" Bloom) are also portrayed as surprisingly well-educated for the bunch of dirt-dwelling minks they effectively are, displaying a facility for speaking in fluent Chinese and even managing to grasp the rudimentary concepts behind Acts of Parliament.
