Edited satellite image of the Rhine-Waal fork showing the beginning of the Nederrijn branch (purple).
Nederrijn ("Nether Rhine") is the name of the Dutch part of River Rhine from the confluence of the cut-off Rhine bend of Oude Rijn and the Pannerdens Kanaal (which was dug to form the new connection between the Waal and Nederrijn branches).
River Nederrijn flows on to the city of Wijk bij Duurstede, from where it continues as River Lek.

Nederrijn ("Nether Rhine") is the name of the Dutch part of River Rhine from the confluence of the cut-off Rhine bend of Oude Rijn and the Pannerdens Kanaal (which forms the connection between the Waal and Nederrijn branches).
River Nederrijn flows on to the city of Wijk bij Duurstede, where it continues as River Lek and the once-important but now small branch of Kromme Rijn (in Roman times border river of the Roman Empire) carries the name "Rhine" towards the city of Utrecht.
Crossing the border into the Netherlands at Spijk, the Rhine is at its widest, but the river then splits into three main distributaries: the IJssel, the Waal and the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine).
Most of the Rhine water (two thirds) flows further west through the Waal and then via the Nieuwe_Waterweg and, merging with the Meuse, through the Hollands_Diep and Haringvliet estuaries into the North_Sea.
The IJssel branch carries one third of the water north into the IJsselmeer while the Nederrijn flows west parallel to the Waal and carries approximately two ninths of the flow.

The weir at Driel controls the distribution of discharge of two of the Rhine branches in the Netherlands, the Nederrijn and the IJssel.
At Driel the island between the lock and the weir is now converted from agricultural use to nature development.
Next to the weir a fish ladder is presently under construction, which enable fish to migrate from the North Sea to their spawning grounds in Germany.

The canal, now indistinguishable from a "real" river, forks off north from river Waal a few kilometres past the point where the Bijlands Kanaal, a similar canal dug to cut off a Waal bend, ends.
It flows past the towns of Pannerden (right bank), which gives the canal its name, and Angeren (left bank) and so north to the point where the old Rhine bend flows into it and the river continues to the sea as Nederrijn (Nether Rhine).
The old Rhine bend, cut off at its upstream end, still exists and is called, unsurprisingly, Oude Rijn (Old Rhine).
But Montgomery's insistence (likely the result of a prestige battle with Patton) ultimately won him approval, despite Allied and Dutch resistance intelligence warnings about heavy German reinforcements in the area.
On September 17, 1944, 5,191 paratroopers of the British First Airborne Division landed near Wolfheze with orders to capture the 2,000 foot-long bridge over the Nederrijn in Arnhem (Operation Market) in anticipation of General Brian Horrocks XXX Tank Corps' arrival (Operation Garden).
The idea was for the paratroopers to hold the bridges so the tanks could pass and circumvent the German Siegfried line.

Well, to be honest, they startled me. Further north-west is the Nationaal Park Hoge Veluwe (www.hogeveluwe.nl), where an entrance fee is required.
Take the Rijndijk south of the river, but beware of speeding cars.
South: the polder between the rivers Nederrijn and Waal, with long, straight roads and almost completely flat.
The river region is a varied landscape around the large rivers (the two channels of the Rhine (Nederrijn and Waal), the Meuse and the IJssel) including their washlands, levees and backswamps.
The regulation of the rivers and the mining of sand have led to the loss of characteristic elements such as swamp woodland and backwaters.

Welcome to our floating home built in 2003, moored in the centre of Arnhem on the river 'de nederrijn'.
We are very close to the main railway and bus station and so we are the right place to come for a good nights sleep and to explore everything Arnhem has to offer like Burgers zoo, all kinds of museums and the Nationaal Park 'de hoge veluwe'
