Needle valves have a narrow tip at the end of the valve stem that is lowered through the seat to limit the flow.
Needle valves are applied to regulate flow into delicate gauges, which may be spoilt by sudden increase of liquids under pressure.
Needle valves are also adopted in conditions where the flow must be slowly halted, and at other times where accurate adjustments of flow are necessary or where a small flow rate is preferred.

The needle valve biasing feature further functions for creating a fuel pressure bias opening force on the needle valve element which biases the needle valve element toward the open position and for increasing the fuel pressure bias opening force as the needle valve element moves from the open position toward the closed position.
Needle valve element 16 also includes a valve seat portion 26 positioned at an inner end for sealingly engaging a valve seat 28 formed on injector body 12 when needle valve element 16 is in the closed position as shown in FIG.
Needle valve element 16 is biased into the closed position by a bias spring 32 positioned in a spring chamber 34 formed between outer guide portion 24 and inner guide portion 30.

The needle valve 50 is maintained in the closed disposition by the bias exerted by the needle valve return spring 52.
The needle valve 50 closes under the combined force of the pressure in the pressure chamber 116 acting on the closing pin 102 and the needle valve return spring 52a.
Since the opening of the needle valve 50 must act against a certain fluid pressure, opening motion of the needle valve 50 is opposed by needle valve return spring 52 and damped by the action of high pressure fuel residing in the spring cage 68 acting on the spring seat 62.

Multiple sample needle valve - Patent 4421123
The valve is a cup valve which utilizes an annular spike arrangement adjacent the bottom of the skirt of the valve for enhancing the sealing effects thereof.
In addition, the pedestal-like internal support for the valve is configured to reduce the degree of deflection inwardly of the skirt of the valve, upon opening, which reduction has the effect of reducing the degree of convolution of the circumferential extent of the skirt during the deflection.
On the side of valve body 12 opposite the skirt, the valve member includes a flattened annular projection 16 which is positioned equi-laterally of the axis 13 of the valve of the invention, and includes a flat surface 22 which is connected to body portion 12 by a tapered wall 24.

The Leybold valve is mainly used at UHV chambers and there it should be the right one.
The best needle valve I know is made by squeezing a hardened copper capillary (1 mm id and 3 mm od) between a brass plate and a brass wedge.
By the way, one of the main reasons of existance of this valve is that does not allow for fractionation (isotopic or otherwise) to arise because of the (molecular) flow out of the narrow orifice like a normal needle valve would instead allow for.

Carburetor Float Needle Valve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
This valve is opened and closed by the float, which moves up and down in the bowl of the carburetor, just like the float in a toilet tank.
When the carburetor bowl is full of gasoline, the float moves up and closes the float needle valve, which in turn closes off the flow of gasoline into the carburetor from the fuel pump.
Sometimes (rarely) the float needle valve sticks in the closed position (needle valve stuck up in the valve body), effectively preventing fuel from entering the carburetor and from there proceeding into the intake manifold and the cylinders, bringing the car to a complete halt.

CO2 Controller Needle Valves and Solenoids
The valve, which by the way is not refered to as a needle valve, but rather as a metering valve, so I suggest that when people go to by a valve from a valve and fitting company, they might have better luck finding the right sort of valve by asking for a metering valve.
For instance, the Cv of a Nupro M series valve is 0.03 which correlates to a flow of 1.2 cubic feet per minute at an inlet pressure of 35 psig.
Usually a needle valve is used, but this is not very reliable, since a needle valve is not designed to regulate pressure, but flow.

 End-of-Tank CO2 Dumping
The needle valve, also known as a fine metering valve, provides a tiny gateway through which the gas is metered out.
The needle valve does that rather well, if the shape of the aperture is such as to be highly turbulent at the terribly low flow rates we demand.
Needle Valve Specs and Selection: When I look at the spec sheets of various needle valves, I see things like Maximum Working Pressure, Flow Coefficient (Cv) and Stem Taper Angle and whether or not the valve is capable of cutting off the flow of gas completely.

Three decades of valve research, design, and manufacturing experience have gone into developing a needle valve for the new millennium.
The Balon needle valve is the result of many design inputs directed at a total solution to needle valve problems, rather than at one or two isolated and limited variations of outdated concepts.
Perennial problems which have plagued needle valve users - such as premature seat failure and consequent leakage, internal contamination and wear, bonnet and stem blow-out hazards, and generally abbreviated service life - have all been attacked in the design of the Balon needle valve.

The needle valve is also extremely tight when closing it, and the cylindrical surface has been machined to provide a non-slipping, but potentially tissue damaging grip.
The extent to which the needle valve is open/closed is given by the position of the micrometric screw on the threaded rod, and can be determined by counting the number of circles visible above the screw.

That valve was also incapable of reducing to flow to anything close to the required bubble count, so I went back to the Wal Mart special.
When I ordered the valve, the person on the phone seemed very evasive as to whether the valve would actually reduce the CO2 flow to 6 bubbles a minute unless it was used with one of their regulators.

With the escapement*-actuated control lever (6) in the down position, the clapper valve (5) moves to the rearward position, allowing air to pass through a tube (3) to the low-speed needle valve (1), interrupting its fuel flow.
At the same time, the clapper valve (5) has a sealed tube (4), so fuel flows through the delivery line (7) to the high-speed needle valve (2) that is adjusted for peak rpm.
Sadly, when the tank was full, this arrangement required that the high-speed needle valve be set very rich, and this robbed the engine's power for the hand-launch takeoff; leaning the mixture usually produced ahot (lean) engine run or flameout as the tank emptied.
