Needlework - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Plain needlework requires no such further explanation as may be given in the case of art needlework, under which title are included (a) embroidery, and (b) other methods of decorative needlework, such as applied or applique work, ornamental quilting, patchwork and couching.
The more necessary stitches in plain needlework for making clothes are tacking, running, hemming, feather-stitching or herring-boning (all of which 'axe practically of the same type), and button-holing in which the thread is looped as each stitch is made.
Whipping has been put to another use in certain 16th-century art needlework for ecclesiastical purposes, where round the gold threads employed as the ground of a design coloured silks are dexterously whipped, closely and openly, producing gradations of tint suffused with a corresponding variation of golden shimmer.

 Southern Decorative Needlework
Needlework was an acceptable area in which they could allow their fancies to roam and could also work to achieve perfection (Lebsock 43).
Another explanation of damage to some southern needlework is the fact that many examples are in the hands of private owners or in the care of small societies or museums without specific conservation training in the care of textile artifacts.
Many samplers and other objects of northern decorated needlework early found their way into museums and thus have enjoyed better preservation than their southern counterparts, which are still largely in the loving but occasionally faulty hands of the family or the small, unaccredited museum.

Or, perhaps, my perception was indelibly colored by the many hours spent in her company while learning the craft...the sweet memories of which are always with me. In any case, I believe Grandma Angela was right about crochet, just as she was right about so many other things.
