NEGAPATAM, a seaport of British India, in the Tanjore district of Madras, forming one municipality with Nagore, a port 3 m.
Negapatam is the terminus of a branch of the South Indian railway, and contains large railway workshops.
Negapatam was one of the earliest settlements of the Protuguese on the Coromandel coast.

During their period of occupation the French struck rupees at Mazulipatam bearing a lotus symbol: a form of coin that was to be continued by the British from 1780 until 1795.
Negapatam, on the Coromandel coast, lay some 20 miles south of the European settlement Karaikal, over 150 miles below Madras, but only 70 miles north of Jaffna on the island of ceylon.
In 1657 the Dutch occupied Negapatam from the Portuguese and in 1676, when the Maratha prince Venkaji had established himself at Tanjore, the grant of Negapatam to the Dutch was confirmed.

Warren Hastings sent from Bengal Sir Eyre Coote, who, though repulsed at Chidambaram, defeated Hyder thrice successively in the battles of Porto Novo, Pollilur and Sholingarh, while Tippoo was forced to raise the siege of Wandiwash, and Vellore was provisioned.
On the arrival of Lord Macartney as governor of Madras, the British fleet captured Negapatam, and forced Hyder Ali to confess that he could never ruin a power, which had command of the sea.
He had sent his son Tippoo to the west coast, to seek the assistance of the French fleet, when his death took place suddenly at Chittur in December 1782.

"Porto Novo" pagodas of this type were struck at Pulicat, Negapatam and Madras.
They got the minting rights from Tanjore and derived the design of their Negapatam fanams from those being struck at Tanjore.
Although they bore the name of Negapatam they were intended principally for ceylon.

After the action at Negapatam on 6 July 1782, Resolution was sent to Manila for wood, biscuit and rigging, and to enter any seaman she found there.
She sailed on July 22, 1782 and was never seen again.

All were furiously contested, both admirals being tenacious fighters, and at Negapatam the French 'Brilliant', lost 47 killed and 136 wounded.
The captain of the 'Sévère', ordered his colours struck but his first lieutenant, refusing to accept this, forcibly shut him up in his cabin and rehoisted them.
This painting is signed and dated 'D Serres 1786', and inscribed bottom left '3rd Action off Negapatam 6th July 1782'.

Which is perhaps as it should be, for the Dutch were on the Coromandel Coast before the English.
To ensure a steady supply of textiles to its eastern settlements, the Dutch first established their presence at Masulipatam in 1605, at Pulicat in 1610 and then at points north like Bimlipatam, before establishing a presence in Sadras and Negapatam (I'm using their spellings) in 1660 and in Cochin in 1663.
The heyday of the Dutch on the coasts of the Coromandel and Malabar was in the 1670s, when its fleet aggressively ruled the seas.

The hill has a monument at the summit, constructed in 1783 by Sir Hector Munro of Novar who was a Commander of the British Forces in India.
His most famous victory there was at Negapatam.
When he returned home he provided work for destitute local people following the Highland Clearances and one of his projects was the construction of the monument on FYRISH which is a replica of the gates of Negapatam.

In 1874, the boats were arranged in three divisions, the red, blue and green, with fifty boats in each; in 1879, and again in 1881, there were two divisions, the red and the blue; and likewise in 1880, in 1903 and in 1906 there were two, the red and the white divisions.
