Topic: Negation (comics)

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

  Evertime Realms - Evertime Archives
In the 40s and 50s sci-fi comics were ubiquitous, but this was a time after superheroes had seemed to die out and every publisher was trying to predict the next great trend.
Another problem with science fiction comics is that “hard” sci-fi, the stuff that’s the bread and butter of the prose realm of science fiction writing (you know, those books without the pictures) just flat-out don’t translate well to comic books.
Comics are a visual medium, and even during a quiet, character-based issue (see my “Favorites” pick at the end of this column for a great example), a comic has to be propelled by the pictures as much of the words.

CrossGen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1998, Tampa, Florida-based entrepreneur Mark Alessi founded a comic book publishing company based not on the prevailing superhero trend but on a variety of genres, with characters nonetheless sharing a single fictional universe.
Unlike other comics companies such as DC Comics and Marvel Comics, which rely on freelance writers and artists, most CrossGen talent were salaried employees of the company and worked out of its headquarters in Tampa.
Yet while the digital comic book art reproduced the fine color of the original, the lettering was not quite legible; this was solved by adding client side browser code so that hovering over the word balloon or thought bubble would enlarge it to a readable size.

NEWSARAMA - NEGATION WAR PART ONE
Negation, as with all the other followers of the book, has been the most consistent comic when it comes to high octane story telling with "O MY GOD!" or for us readers, "BOHICA!" pages every issue.
Negation was just a few issues old back then, but I immediately got off my computer and went down to the comic store and bought out all the current and back issues of Negation.
Negation has been my favorite comic for the last two years, and Negation War will only blow the lid off of what Bedard, Pelletier, Meikis and Martin have done up until this point.

Now while this isn't the first foray into digital comics I've seen -- Marvel and DC have both licensed their books for the CD-ROM treatment in the past -- this is a new spin on the concept, and depending on pricing and mainstream-market availability, it has a real chance of striking a chord.
The cosmic emperor Charon, ruler of the Negation universe, has set his sights upon our reality, and in order to determine what must be done to invade, he has ordered 100 individuals of varying degrees of power abducted from our universe and brought to that of the Negation.
Putting comics on DVD, playing them like partially animated movies, is an intriguing idea, and can probably appeal to a more casual audience than the one that currently reads comics, and it might appeal more to those who were reared more on video games and television than comics.

There has been a pretty surprising turn of events for one of the main characters of Negation, putting her on the side of the villains, and it's perfectly consistent with her character and yet something of a shock at the same time.
The world-shattering appearance of the Negation on the world in the beginning is impressive, although it pales beside the Authority-esque confrontation between that world's Sigil bearer, Evinlea and Charon.
While the Negation cast could fit in alright with some of the Sigilverse books, notably the cast of Sigil and maybe (at a stretch) Scion, the jarring change of tone between Negation War and books like Way of the Rat and Sojourn leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Jack Kirby Collector celebrates the life and career of the "King" of comics through interviews with Kirby and his contemporaries, feature articles, and rare and unseen Kirby artwork.
At the time it was a logical extension of the intertextual continuity Kirby and Stan Lee had pioneered at Marvel in the 1960s; yet the Fourth World went Marvel one better, by offering several variations on the same theme simultaneously.
These comics represented Kirby's boldest bid to turn the superhero genre into a vehicle for ideas.
