Earth Wide Moth: Adventures in Illegal Art
Hosler told us about Negativeland's well-known media prank--a press release they distributed in California about a cancelled tour, shut down because federal authorities connected them to a quadruple homicide in Rochester, Minn (much of which was fabrication, only the murders were real).
And he also made it clear that he thought of Negativeland's albums as concept albums; he thought of those albums as having a kind of coherence that dissolves in the age of mp3 exchange.
It's as if Negativeland achieved notoriety because of the conditions of their times (an era of media scarcity, the 80's and and early 90's, before the web's abundance took crept over).

The prose crackles, and the dialogue is spare and sharp.
In Negativeland, Doug Nufer writes under one hell of a self-imposed semantic limit (note the book's title) and uses it as an excuse to revel in all the back-to-front possibilities of the American vernacular, not to mention the back-to-front possibilities of storytelling.

With Negativeland, I recently did a gig at the prison in Monroe, Wa., where a group of lifers read the book and I came to talk about it.
I forgot to mention that with Negativeland I also had a scene pop into my head that closely followed an experience I had in driving home from a minor league baseball in Tacoma--a scene which, it turns out, the constraints of that novel managed to faithfully render.

Negativeland tells the story of Ken Honochick, "Chick" to his travelling companion, as he crosses the country with his friend Miriam.
As well as being a fine novel in itself it is also a great example of the use of constraint, how it doesn't necessitate odd structures or circumlocutions and can be integrated into the theme of a work.
As soon as I finished Negativeland, I started on his novel Never Again, which is written without repeating any words.

Sadly, as SST Records and the band Negativeland have found out, this is not the case.
Negativeland are cultural guerillas, mind pirates who perform their work with satire.
The band's label, Island Records, and their music publisher, Warner- Chappell Music, sued the independent SST label, who had released Negativeland's offending parody of a U2 song, and were awarded over $90,000 in damages by the court.

Island records sued mainly on the basis of the cover which feaured "U2" in large letters and "Negativeland" underneath, conveniently ignoring the fact that you would have to be an idiot to mistake this for a U2 record.
It nearly bankrupted Negativeland and Island even insisted on every copy of the record being recalled and destroyed.
The best way U2 could show their support would be to commission Negativeland to do an "official" remix of one of their tracks.

My guess is that they don’t want to be taken to task for people selling iPods filled with songs that they don’t have the legal right to sell to someone.
In this case for instance, there probably isn’t any way to legally sell the Negativeland files to another person since either they were ripped or they are only licensed from a service to the person they were originally sold to.
As to why they are bothering, it might actually be in their contract with the music industry to attempt to stop these transactions from taking place.
