 Manzanita, Nehalem, Wheeler - Guide to the Northern Oregon Coast
Located between Manzanita and Nehalem on the Northern Oregon Coast, Nehalem Bay State Park is at the beginning of the four mile sand spit separating the Nehalem Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
On one side of the park is the Nehalem Bay with the village of Wheeler on it's opposite shore.
To reach Nehalem Bay State Park from either the north or south, turn west off U.S. Highway 101 at the Shell station between the towns of Manzanita and Nehalem (there is a sign).

Initial ocean migration off Oregon appears to be to the north of their natal streams, but as they mature during their second summer in the ocean they are found predominantly off the coasts of California and Oregon to the south of their natal streams.
Oregon is near the southern boundary of the range of coho salmon.
The north Oregon coast coho populations are known to be susceptible to the parasite Ceratomyxia shasta, which is present in the Columbia River, while wild Columbia River fish are resistant.

Nehalem was a typical western small town, with false-fronted buildings facing a main street that was partly built on pilings and fill ground right on the river's edge.
The Nehalem Union High school was built on the hillside overlooking the town, and is still standing and used as a Grammar School today.
The entire area was helped by the opening of the Coast highway, (U.S.101) that opened in 1941, that connected the north with the southern portion of highway, for the entire length of the state.
