Nehushtan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nehushtan was a staff of copper and brass.
Generations later, Hezekiah destroyed it because the children of Israel had forgotten its symbolism and began to regard the object itself as an idol, "burning incense to it".
The lapse of nearly one thousand years had invested the "brazen serpent" with a mysterious sanctity; and in order to deliver the people from their infatuation, and impress them with the idea of its worthlessness, Hezekiah called it, in contempt, "Nehushtan", a brazen thing, a mere piece of brass (2 Kings 18:4).

Modern exegesis holds two different opinions in regard to the meaning of the word "Nehushtan," which is explained either as denoting an image of bronze, and as entirely unconnected with the word "naḥash" (serpent), or as a lengthened form of "naḥash" (comp.
The assumption that the tradition about "Nehushtan" is not older than the time of Hezekiah is, however, not contested.

Re: A Bowl of Milk Out for Snakes
Nehushtan, "Brazen Serpentess," was a Serpent-goddess established by Moses.
Although initially the adoration of Nehushtan was to obtain protection from deadly serpents sent by Yahweh, in later times it was said that serpents were sent to slay those who worshipped serpents [Wisdom of Solomon 11:15; 15:18; 16:3-5; Sirach 12:13].
As the Mother of Serpents, Nehushtan's children who plagued the Hebrews were called muppim, "poisonous serpents" or "children of Mup"; only by propitiating the Mother were the muppim rendered harmless.

Caduceus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The symbol's origins are thought to date to as early as 2600 BC in Mesopotamia, and there are several references to a caduceus-like symbol in the Bible, namely in Numbers 21:4–9, and 2 Kings 18:4.
During the Exodus, Moses was instructed by God to fashion a pole upon which he was to position a serpent made of bronze; when looked upon, this Nehushtan, as it was called in Hebrew, would spare the lives of the Israelites stricken by venomous snake bites.
The intent was that people would look upward and be reminded to pray to God, but eventually the meaning was forgotten and this symbol was apparently worshiped by the Hebrew people until the reign of Hezekiah as described in 2 Kings 18:4.

Nehushtan - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the first place, the word Nehushtan is not a common noun, and cannot mean simply "a piece of brass." The point of the Biblical statement is entirely lost by such a construction.
As such it would be sacred to all worshippers of the brazen serpent, and familiar to all who frequented the Temple.
These readings agree in their indication that Nehushtan was the name by which the serpent-image was generally known during the years it was worshipped, rather than an expression used for the first time by Hezekiah on the occasion of its destruction.

While most of the references to serpents in the Bible are negative, Jesus is reported to have compared his own person and the crucifixtion to Nehushtan.
Referring to his forthcoming crucifixtion, Jesus said "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:14-15).
