Neighbourhood (mathematics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In topology and related areas of mathematics, a neighbourhood (or neighborhood) is one of the basic concepts in a topological space.
Intuitively speaking, a neighbourhood of a point is a set containing the point where you can "wiggle" or "move" the point a bit without leaving the set.
Neighbourhoods in more than one dimension are generally chosen equivalent to Euclidean metrics for their symmetry and readability.

Finite Mathematics and Its Applications, Eighth Edition by Larry Joel Goldstein, David I. Schneider, Martha J. Siegel, T. Graedel (Prentice Hall) This work is the eighth edition of our text for the traditional finite mathematics course taught to first- and second-year college students, especially those majoring in business and the social and biological sciences.
The Applicability of Mathematics As a Philosophical Problem by Mark Steiner (Harvard University Press) analyzes the different ways mathematics is applicable in the physical sciences, and presents a startling thesis - the success of mathematical physics appears to assign the human mind a special place in the cosmos.
Mathematics is applicable in many senses, and this ambiguity has bred confusion and error--even among "analytic" philosophers: because there are many senses of "application" and "applicability," there are many questions about the application of mathematics that ought to be, but have not been, distinguished by philosophers.

 Mixed Income Neighbourhoods
In Canada, measures of basic school related competencies, such as reading and mathematics, have been significantly associated with family income and parental education levels in children as young as five years of age.
However, it is interesting to note that higher income, mixed income neighbourhoods in the centre of Vancouver, such as Kitsilano, Eric Hamber and Prince of Wales have consistent high levels of childhood readiness for learning and high school academic performance.
While these neighbourhoods are not considered low income and good school performance is expected, these school catchment areas often surpass uniformly high income catchment areas such as Lord Byng and University Hill in measures of school readiness.

Neighbourhoods of Independence for Random Processes via Information Geometry -- from Mathematica Information Center
In this article we consider the Freund family of distributions as a 4-manifold equipped with Fisher information as Riemannian metric and derive the induced Alpha-geometry, that is, the Alpha-Ricci curvature, the Alpha-scalar curvature, and so forth.
We examine special cases as submanifolds and discuss their geometrical structures; via one submanifold we provide examples of neighbourhoods of the independent case for bivariate distributions having identical exponential marginals.
Thus, since exponential distributions complement Poisson point processes, we obtain a means to discuss the neighbourhood of independence for random processes.

Neighbourhood (graph theory) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the mathematical area of graph theory, the neighbourhood of a vertex v in a graph G is the induced subgraph of G consisting of all vertices adjacent to v and all edges connecting two such vertices.
The same neighbourhood notation may also be used to refer to sets of adjacent vertices rather than the corresponding induced subgraphs.
If all vertices in G have neighbourhoods that are isomorphic to the same graph H, G is said to be locally H, and if all vertices in G have neighbourhoods that belong to some graph family F, G is said to be locally F (Hell 1978, Sedlacek 1983).

Her career as a mathematics educator evolved into her becoming champion for the cause of full participation of women in mathematics.

This volume is an introduction to mathematical Knot Theory; the theory of knots and links of simple closed curves in three-dimensional space.
Readers are assumed to have knowledge of the basic ideas of the fundamental group and simple homology theory although explanations throughout the text are plentiful and well-done.
The mathematical theory of knots is intended to be a precise investigation into the way that 1-dimensional "string" can lie in ordinary 3-dimensional space.

Neighbourhoods of Randomness and the Information Geometry of the Mckay Bivariate Gamma 3-manifold
We showed [3] that gamma distributions provide models for departures from randomness, since every neighbourhood of an exponential distribution contains a neighbourhood of gamma distributions, using an information theoretic metric topology.
Using Mathematica, without which the computations would have been prohibitively tedious, we derived also the information geometry of the 3-manifold of Mckay bivariate gamma distributions, which can provide a metrization of departures from randomness and independence for bivariate processes.
