Nevertheless Back was selected for his first full cap against Scotland in 1994 and didn't look back, going on to make the No.7 shirt his own over the next nine years.
Back made his Leicester debut in 1990 as a 21-year-old and quickly established himself in the dominant Tigers back row alongside Dean Richards and John Wells, so when the national call finally came he was well prepared to make the most of it.
Back in England colours he formed one third of another formidable back row unit with Richard Hill and Lawrence Dallaglio, winning the Five Nations in 1999 and playing in that year's World Cup.

Neil Back - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neil Antony Back (born January 16, 1969 in Coventry) is a former international rugby union footballer for England, who also played for Leicester Tigers.
Back was a master of controlling the ball at the back of a rolling maul and in 1999 he was Leicester's top try scorer with 16 tries as Tigers often kicked penalties to touch for lineouts near to the opposition's try line, won the subsequent lineout and the pack drove Back over to score.
Back was one of England's outstanding players during the 2003 Rugby World Cup; starting six of the seven games in the tournament, scoring two tries along the way the only fixture he missed was the pool game against Uruguay.

Sporting Life - Six Nations 2002
Stand-in skipper Neil Back has launched a stinging attack on England's critics and insisted they are capable of lifting the World Cup next year.
Back, however, rejected that theory, and also dismissed suggestions that victory this weekend would be meaningless after yet another key defeat.
Back said a poor kicking game and loss of ball in contact had been key factors in England's defeat, as had the visitors' inability to defend the ruck area against Fabien Galthie's inspired running game.

 Neil Young in the 90s
Of course, it's been the last two groups that have put Neil back into the hearts of his fans, got him plenty of new ones and got him firmly back on the charts (though Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth helped his hipster credentials among "Generation X").
Admittedly, some of Neil's 80s music is just as contemptuous especially considering how easily he bounced back as if to say that he could have made great music any time he felt like it (not to mention burying the Catalyst performances).
He still means something to a lot of people and will for a long time because not only does he still have the knack that made him great but he also refused to turn into a bitter old man or clever statesman or live solely off his past achievements.

If we could be transported back to Neil's first few tours with Rush, we would see a relatively large set of silver Slingerland drums, and some cymbals, clearly patterned after Keith Moon's double bass drum setup, with a few odd extra cymbals and a cluster of cowbells that Neil had collected over the years.
Neil took it upon himself to add various percussion and orchestral instruments to his drum set, to add some spice and variety to the new music they were creating.
Neil was now using his various electronic percussion pads to play all manner of sampled and synthesized sounds.

When we saw Neil launch into his first solo facing the boys in the band, and heard him inflect the words "hey hey, my my" with a kind of humorous emphasis, it was easy to see how happy he was and that he and the boys were tight.
Apparently one of the reasons Neil kept manically repeating that mesmerizing riff was the appearance on stage left of a scantily clad gal who was on the point of fainting or something.
