Neil Leifer has been one of the top sports photographers in the world since the early 1960’s.
Neil: I discovered early in the 1958 pro football season that every Sunday a veteran’s hospital would come with three or four bus loads of army vets, most of whom were in wheel chairs to see the New York Giants play football at Yankee Stadium.
Neil: Mark Kaufman told me years ago when I was still a kid, that he thought that being a sports photographer was the best training ground to do anything in photography.

More than just a good-looking coffee table book, and much more than simply a book of sports photography, this is a celebration of American photojournalism in the last half of the 20th century.
When I first leafed through it, I was amazed at how many iconic photographs were taken by just one man. Leifer has a gift, and we are fortunate that he is willing and able to share it with us.
While at Sports Illustrated, Neil made incredible pictures by capturing the "decisive moment" in sports both on and off the field.

Leifer is mostly known for his sports photographs, especially the dramatic photograph of the Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston fight in Lewiston, Maine in1965.
Although sports photography was a significant part of Leifer’s career, his photojournalism covered many more subjects: Hollywood personalities, politicians, presidents.
Neil Leifer will be available for interviews December 6-7.

As I explain on the next page, this Neil Leifer photo was taken seconds after his famous color image of Ali shouting over Liston, but was misplaced at SI and rediscovered only five years ago.

The legendary Neil Leifer archive of Muhammad Ali photographs is to be exhibited for the first time in Europe in a stunning tribute to one of the world’s most popular icons -at London’s Proud Galleries this March.
Featuring over 90 images, including many which have never been published before, Muhammad Ali is the first exhibition of Leifer’s work solely devoted to this sporting hero and the first European exhibition to have included his iconic Ali shots.
Having photographed Ali in 35 fights and 35 studio shoots over the last 40 years for publications such as Sports Illustrated and Time, Leifer has been in a unique position to capture both the highs and the lows, and the private and the personal moments of this people’s hero.

The 90-minute special is expected to air on the ESPN networks next spring.

Leifer is also producing a 90-minute documentary for ESPN on sportswriter, NPR commentator and HBO Sports reporter, Frank Deford.
The documentary is scheduled to air on ESPN in August.

Neil's is in color and his cool son Corey is good at going after the folks who steal the image.

Unusual distortions of arms, legs and torsos are typically inevitable because the film can only match one image velocity while the subjects are moving at a great number of velocities simultaneously.
Two photographers who have explored the application of photofinish-type cameras for effective sports photography are George Silk and Neil Leifer, both associated with Time/Life.
Operating principles associated with strip camera technology are also the basis for the Cirkut panoramic camera design as well as that of the various modern versions of these cameras that were introduced on a rather large scale commercial basis by the Eastman Kodak Company in the early 1900's.
