Scotsman.com Sport - Lessons pay off for Saltires debutant Neil
IF Scotland cricket star Neil McCallum needed inspiration for his inaugural journey into the Saltires set-up in Sunday's C and G Trophy clash with Durham Dynamos then it would have been logical had he turned to work-mates at George Watson's College.
It is hard to believe that McCallum actually entered the scene as a bowler when, as a fifth year pupil at Watson's, he was drafted against Ferguslie in an Abbot Ale KO Cup tie and promptly reeled off figures of 9-3-3-17.
Despite such endorsements, though, McCallum is refusing to take anything for granted about starting on Sunday in a match Saltires need to win to boost their prospects of claiming a highly-respectable Northern Conference top half slot.

Bat man Returns - [Sunday Herald]
McCallum, 28, is a stocky pract itioner with tree trunks for arms, in the mould of Graham Thorpe or Chris Adams.
McCallum’s adventures with the national side in his early 20s were largely fruitless, and the rot continued when he was given out, caught off his toe when recalled last month for the Intercontinental Cup match against Namibia.
McCallum believes he owes his international rebirth to the decision to switch from Watsonians, the club he captained and which was joined at the hip to the establishment that has featured in so many chapters of his life story.

Grown successfully in the north Island of New Zealand, winemaker Neil McCallum of Dry River Estate is dedicated to producing high quality gewürztraminer, but every vintage results in nervousness as there is an expectation in the marketplace that each year needs to surpass the last.
Neil is growing this particular grape in the Martinborough region but further north where the climate is slightly warmer, his colleague Dr.Alan Limmer is producing a gewürztraminer at Stonecroft Wines in the Hawkes Bay region.
Neil: “… the wines are picked solely on flavour and we're trying to optimize what the vineyard can give rather than aiming for a particular style.

McCallum says he owes a lot to his adviser and friend, Derek Milne, who told him that Marlborough and Martinborough were the best prospects for planting a vineyard for quality grapes.
Martinborough was chosen for its proximity to Wellington, an hours drive away and McCallum's Dry River Vineyard was planted in 1979.

The Scotsman - Sport - Gloom lifts as battling Watsonians strike gold
NEIL McCallum, the captain of Watsonians, is one of the most enthusiastic and talented young cricketers around, but even this normally upbeat batsman has become something of a cynic in this rain-affected season.
It was no different on Saturday morning, as he sat by his telephone in gloomy anticipation of a call from his Heriot’s counterpart, Wayne Wiblin, confirming yet another cancellation, but on this occasion, his fears proved groundless, and his team and cricket were the joint winners.
Remarkably, while games were falling all around the country, McCallum’s phone never rang and fully 12 hours later in the gathering Goldenacre gloaming the Scotland player had cause to be grateful.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Neil who, from a batting point of view, will have a chance to play a prolonged innings rather than go in at No.6 or No.7 in a one-day match.
Neil represents a raft of players who have seen opportunities loom, helped by the fact that, as well as scoring runs in his three matches to date, his fielding has been outstanding.
