		If anything, Neil Michael Hagerty is the sonic equivalent of Hagerty's novel -Victory Chimp: chaotic, clever, and on a very specific wavelength that he doesn't bother to decode for the uninitiated.
		Neil Michael Hagerty's mix of stiff, cheap drum machine beats, psychedelic organs, and guitar heroics lends itself to some of Hagerty's most mercurial music: Lengthy tracks such as "Kali, the Carpenter," "Fortune and Fear," and "I Found a Stranger" constantly shift and change in alternately fascinating and alienating ways.

		Live, Hagerty is famous for turning his back on the audience in the middle of a song and soloing (or noodling, as some would have it) for six hour stretches.

		My previous dislike of all things Hagerty, specifically the ponderous and confusing work of Royal Trux, was shattered when I saw him do a solo-billed set at the first Los Angeles version of the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival, held at UCLA in 2002.
		In a very sizable auditorium, with only about thirty people watching him and his two-piece back-up band, Hagerty delivered what is to this day one of the strongest rock ‘n roll live sets I have witnessed in my entire life, no joke.
		Thankfully, Hagerty’s third album, “The Howling Hex”, does contain a live version of “Rockslide”, one as close to the version I first heard as it’s humanly possible to get.
