Accordiing to Marshall James Reid was born in Kilmaurs on 8 September 1823 and died on the golf course at St Andrews on 23 June 1894.
Marshall states that Hugh Reid was born in Manchester on 9 February 1860 and died in Glasgow on 7 July 1935.
He was the son of James Reid and was born whilst his father was working for Sharp Stewart, but in 1863 he returned to Scotland to manage the Neilson and Co. In 1893 he was joined by his four sons, including Hugh.

Neilson, Reid and Co Walter Neilson's first engineering works in Hyde Park Street, Finnieston, Glasgow was a family enterprise founded in 1836; the stationary engine for cable haulage up the Cowlairs Incline on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was built here.
Despite Neilson's departure, the name "Neilson, Reid and Co" was retained for the Hyde Park Works.
James Reid died in 1894 while trying to knock a golf ball out of a bunker on the course at St Andrews.

Reid went to Manchester to work for Sharp, Stewart and Co, locomotive builders, but returned to Glasgow, to be Neilson’s managing partner after the departure of Henry Dubs from the firm to set up his own company in 1864.
Neilson was aggrieved at the treatment he received from Reid, which deprived him, as he saw it, of his rightful share in the business.
Hugh Reid became convinced of the advantages of industrial concentration and helped to negotiate the amalgamation of Neilson, Reid and Co with its major Glasgow competitors, Sharp, Stewart and Co and Dubs and Co in 1903.

 North British Locomotive Company
The company was formed in 1903 from several older companies, the oldest of which was Sharp, Roberts and Co. (originally of Manchester), Neilson, and Dübs and Co. Lowe notes that the firm of Neilson and Mitchell was founded by Walter Neilson and James Mitchell in about 1836.
Atkins gives a very succinct account of how in 1876 Neilson was forced out of the firm which he founded and how he formed the Clyde Locomotive Company in Springburn which only built some thirty locomotives before being taken over by Sharp Stewart and becoming the Atlas Works.
The company was formed in 1903 from several companies, the oldest of which was Sharp, Roberts and Co., originally of Manchester, Neilson, and Dübs and Co. The extensive tabulated data records the varied output for home and overseas railways.

Neilson and Company was a locomotive manufacturer in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 1837 the firm moved to Hyde Park Street and was known as Kerr, Mitchell and Neilson and, in 1840, Kerr, Neilson and Company, becoming Neilson and Mitchell in 1845.
In 1884, Neilson left to form a new company at Clyde Locomotive Works but, though Reid became the sole owner, it was not until 1898 that the company changed its name to Neilson, Reid and Company.

 Slot Canyons of the American Southwest - Crawford Draw, Utah
Further into the narrows, the rocks become temporarily greyish, darker and more homogenous, with pebbles and boulders in the streamway, as Reid Neilson is joined by Crawford Draw from the north.
Downstream of the Crawford - Reid Neilson junction, the drainage remains generally narrow and enclosed for a mile or so, initially with a few more pools but soon the floor is dry, flat and sandy and the canyon widens very gradually.
There is an entry/exit route on the south side after about 1/3 mile then various others, mostly on the north side, as the walls become less steep in places.

Works number 716, despatched new to T. Walker on 19th December 1878 for use on the construction of the Dover (Buckland Junction) to Deal section of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway; Guston tunnel is near the summit.
It is Baird and Scottish Steel Ltd’s No.11 (Neilson 2937 of 1882) at Gartsherrie Ironworks, near Glasgow.
This locomotive is in working order and, with spares available from the other Neilson Reid locomotives at Gartsherrie, could work on the Society’s line at Chasewater, near Lichfield, in 1968.

No.131 was built in February 1901 as part of a class of 13, 4-4-0, mixed traffic locomotives for the Great Northern Railway (Ireland).
The 4-4-0 tender locomotive was built by Neilson Reid in Glasgow as works number NR5757.
