Protein secretion and secreted proteins in pathogenic Neisseriaceae.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Here, we present a survey of the secretome of the pathogenic Neisseriaceae, based on the available genome sequences, and the current knowledge of the functions and structures of the secreted proteins.
Of the six protein-secretion pathways that are widely disseminated among Gram-negative bacteria, three pathways appear to be present among the Neisseriaceae, i.e.

 NEISSERIACEAE

DNA-rRNA hybridization (Rossau et al., 1986, 1989a; Van Landschoot et al., 1986) has shown that the bacterial family Neisseriaceae as described in Bergey's Manual (Bøvre, 1984) and in the first edition of The Prokaryotes (Bøvre and Hagen, 1981) cannot be maintained as such and should be redefined.
DNA-rRNA hybridization in the Neisseriaceae and the complete sequence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae 16S rRNA led to the development of rRNA-derived DNA probes which can be used to differentiate between organisms at the species or subspecies level (Rossau et al., 1988, 1989b).
Clustering of 16S rRNA sequences from one or a few strains of Eikenella corrodens, Simonsiella muelleri, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae and some reference strains from rRNA superfamilies I to III confirmed our findings that these organisms constitute one group (Dewhirst et al., 1989).
