Aroused by his studies and his observation of the luxury in dress and habits, the superstitious pilgrimages to shrines, the use of omens and the worship given to Mahomet and Mahommedan saints rather than to God, he began a mission to proclaim the simplicity of the early religion founded on the Koran and Sunna (i.e.

The Nejd is a harsh environment in which the basics of life, food and water, are scarce, and the existence of both man and beast is challenged in the extreme.
Vitality of spirit and courage were also essential to success in battle; this was to be tempered by intelligence and kindness as both a willing mount and as a large domesticated mammal forced to live in close coexistence with the spartan, mobile life of his keeper.
Beyond this, the Arabians of the Nejd were required to be extremely efficient metabolizers, capable of going for many days without food or water, and sustaining both strength and vitality on very poor quality foods.

Stephen Schwartz on Wahhabism on National Review Online
Wahhabism emerged in the benighted wastes of Nejd in central Arabia in the middle of the 18th century.
Russia, coming late to a modern economy, tried to rush ahead by fabricating the socialist "new man"; Italy and Germany, slow in their national unification and delayed in the competition for colonies, produced fascism; Japan, closed to the world until the mid 19th century, launched itself into the brutal subjugation of the Asian mainland.
If these countries were handicapped in their modernization, Nejd was apparently retarded beyond remedy, and the Wahhabis did not attempt a serious assault beyond the Arabian peninsula until centuries had passed.
