Julia Bullard Nelson, teacher of newly freed fls in Texas, was born on May 13, 1842, in High Ridge, Connecticut, the daughter of Edward and Angeline (Raymond) Bullard.
The Nelsons, whose son was born in 1867, lived on a farm in Minnesota.
The association appealed to Julia Nelson because of her own knowledge of the underground railroad from her childhood in Iowa and also because of her family's affiliation with both Congregational and Methodist churches that were strongly opposed to slavery.

He also was a University of Minnesota regent from 1882 to 1893, and served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1883 to 1889.

Oddly, the village of Nelson was first named Dent, after Richard Dent who had settled in Alexandria in 1868.
A man by the name of Star was its first mechant and served as postmaster until May of 1881, at which time the name was changed to Nelson in honor of Senator Knute Nelson of Douglas County.
It was still known for some wild Saturday nights in the late 1950s, but today Nelson is a quiet place with with a few local residents, a restrurant and place to wash down the road dust.
