The Nelson River Bipole is a system of two HVDC lines in Manitoba, operated by Manitoba Hydro.
They transfer the electric power generated by several hydroelectric power stations along the Nelson River in Northern Manitoba across the wilderness to the populated areas in the south.
Nelson River Bipoles 1 and 2 terminate at Dorsey Converter Station near Rosser, Manitoba.

The bipole conductors would be loaded toeither 1.37 or 0.37 of their thermal limit, with the parallel monopole always carrying +/- 1 times its thermal limit current.
This allows heavier currents to be carried by the bipole conductors, and full use of the installed third conductor for energy transmission.
While capital costs are higher than for a bipole conversion operating at the same voltage class, the extra power capability reduces incremental cost per megawatt.

Bipole III was a 500 kV direct current transmission line designed to carry power from Conawapa and other generating stations along the lower Nelson River to southern markets.
Of the five potential corridors considered, Hydro hoped to route the line down the east side of Lake Winnipeg, away from Bipoles I and II on the west side, to avoid running all three lines in a common right-of way where one bad storm could cause a major, long-term power outage.

The tremendous hydroelectric potential of the Nelson River in northern Manitoba has been appreciated by electrical power planners since the turn of the century.
The Nelson River HVDC transmission lines accommodate two bipolar transmission systems called Bipole 1 and Bipole 2.
Bipole 1 is rated to transmit electricity at a voltage of ±450 kV and Bipole 2 is rated to transmit electricity at a voltage of ±500 kV.

IEEE History Center: Nelson River HVDC Transmission System, 1972
The Nelson River, located in the province, was up until the early 1960s an untapped resource for hydroelectric power.
One of the challenges of establishing this transmission line was the varied terrain and the presence of permafrost, which existed in some areas at 30ºF to 32º F (-1ºC to 0ºC), making the foundation subject to a reduction in soil strength and settling of up to 3 feet (1 meter).
The significance of this low-voltage line lies in the fact that for the first time two HVDC bipoles were paralleled and deparalleled using high voltage high-speed switches, the system being unique in the sense that Bipole 1 uses mercury arc valves while Bipole 2 comprises second generation thyristor valves.

A new 500-kilovolt line to bring more power south from Nelson River dams could run along the right-of-way for the utility's existing high-voltage lines, which go west of Lake Winnipeg through Grand Rapids.
But Adams said it makes sense to build the new line, known as Bipole 3, whether or not new dams are built on the Nelson River.
A transmission line on the east side of Lake Winnipeg would be shorter than the two existing high-voltage lines, saving the equivalent of 70 megawatts of power that is now lost on the long trip to Winnipeg.
