Nelsonville was settled in 1818 and was incorporated in 1838; it was named in honor of Elisha Nelson, who built the first house here.

The bypass project has its supporters and detractors in both Nelsonville and the region, but Nelsonville leaders have lined up against the project and have threatened to file a lawsuit in an attempt to stop it.
Filson said that the current project is moving along well and ODOT hopes to have the highway through Nelsonville open to both lanes of traffic in time for Hocking College's Paul Bunyan Festival this fall.
He is also concerned about the economic impact of the bypass on Nelsonville and the quality of life aspect as well.
