The group is most commonly referred to as the Phylum Nemertea, but it may also be called the Phylum Nermertinea, the Phylum Nemertini or, alternatively, the Phylum Rhynchocoela.
All of these names refer to exactly the same group of animals, and simply represent the names given to that group by different researchers at different times or in different countries.
The name "Rhynchocoela" was used extensively in the United States and Canada until the 1970s when it began to fall out of fashion, nonetheless, it is still occasionally used.

Several phyla within the Lophotrochozoa have trochophore larvae (Nemertea, Mollusca, Sipuncula, Echiura, Pogonophora, Annelida), and several have a lophophore, a ring of tentacles encircling the mouth (Bryozoa, Entoprocta, Phoronida, Brachiopoda).
