Nemesis (star) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nemesis is a hypothetical red dwarf star or brown dwarf, orbiting the Sun at a distance of about 50,000 to 100,000 AU, somewhat beyond the Oort cloud.
Nemesis' existence was proposed by Whitmire and Jackson in Nature in 1984, 308, 713-715, and also by Davis, Hut and Muller in 1984 (Nature 308 : 715-717) to explain an apparent 26-million year cycle in the occurrence of mass extinctions on Earth as noted by Raup and Sepkoski.
According to the theory, Nemesis periodically (roughly every 26 million years), passes through a denser region of the Oort cloud, disrupting the orbits of comets, and sending millions of comets into the inner solar system and potential collision with the Earth.

Star Trek: Nemesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thematically, the plot of Nemesis is an example of power corrupting and the need for vengeance driving an individual over the edge to his doom, as best exemplified in the original series films by Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and in literature in Moby Dick.
Nemesis was to have been the first Star Trek film to feature the character of Wesley Crusher (played by actor Wil Wheaton).
The poor performance of Nemesis, coupled with the generally low ratings of Star Trek: Enterprise (the series was cancelled in 2005) has left the franchise with an uncertain future.

 Nemesis
The "Nemesis Theory" was an outgrowth of the discovery of Alvarez et al., that the impact of a large (>10 km diameter) comet or asteroid was responsible for the great mass extinction that took place 65 million years ago.
The Nemesis theory was devised to account for this regularity in the timing of the mass extinctions reported by Raup and Sepkoski.
Perturbations from passing stars are not sufficient to disrupt the orbit, but they are sufficient to cause a slight (a few Myr) jitter in the interval between extinctions.

Nemesis, Proposed Companion Star to the Sun and Mass Extinctions on Earth
Nemesis was the culmination of a chain of events that began in 1977, in Gubbio, Italy, a tiny village halfway between Rome and Florence.
The case for the companion star is perhaps solid enough to score a victory in a court of law, but in the court of science, the ultimate proof will be in the finding.
Using the computer-controlled 30-inch reflecting telescope at Leuschner Observatory, in Lafayette, Calif., the scientists are in the process of photographing 5,000 red stars in the northern hemisphere and measuring the parallax of each—the shift in its apparent position as the Earth rotates around the sun.

The stars are about 60 light-years away, and the shape of their disks have astronomers pondering the long-debated possibility that our own sun might have an as-yet unfound companion dubbed Nemesis.
Kalas and Graham speculate that stars also having sharp outer edges to their debris disks have a companion — a star or brown dwarf —; that keeps the disk from spreading outward, similar to how Saturn's moons shape the edges of some of the planet's rings.
Perhaps a passing star ripped off the edges of the original planetary disk, but a star-sized companion, remaining in place, would be necessary to keep the remaining disk material from spreading outward, he figures.

 The Nemesis Theory by Sasha
The Nemesis Theory stems from the discovery of a crater 10 km in diameter which is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
The probability of a companion star also gains support by the fact that more than 50% of stars in a galaxy are in a binary system, which would lead one to conclude that a "death" companion star to the sun to be a probable reality.
To determine which star is the Sun's companion star, photographs of 5,000 red stars have been taken along with the measurement of the apparent shift in position determined by a second photograph picture taken 2 to 6 months later.

Nemesis was proposed by Richard Muller to explain the recurring mass extinctions on Earth, and the primary motivation for the existence of Nemesis was the evidence from Raup and Sepkoski that mass extinction events occurred periodically.
This and the total lack of observational evidence for Nemesis has caused the hypothesis to be largely discredited.
Nemesis is also the title of a science fiction novel written by Isaac Asimov.\n

While Nemesis is not the best of the ten, even considering the very popular observation that even numbered films are best, it is also not the worse.

SPACE.com -- Nemesis: Does the Sun Have a 'Companion'?
Nemesis is cautiously supported by a handful of scientists, who often sound like ringside rooters eager for a victory but thankful they don't have to put the gloves on.
The notion of companion stars is also exceedingly common -- more than half of all stars are part of such a binary system, in which two stars are thought to form out of a single cloud of gas and dust.
The smaller of the two stars does most of the orbiting, whereas the larger one is much closer to the center of the dance routine.

Star Trek films always seem to have a consistent feel, and since the TNG era began on the big screen there has been a nagging TV-episode quality to the movies (First Contact being the exception).
The TOS crew may have overstayed their welcome on the big screen and with Star Trek evolving so much these days it is important for this cast to evolve as well.
One of the things that most separates Star Trek from other franchises like Star Wars is that it is realistic enough that we can believe without too much of a stretch that humans could be living in a similar society 400 years from now.
