In the religion of nenbutsu, though, the satori attained is spoken of as salvation.
The salvation of the nenbutsu is thus the salvation of the Teaching.
If we inquire as to how the congregation of nenbutsu ought to be organized, it is clear that the Shinshu institution presently possesses an organizational structure that differs little from that of the religion of prayer; it is a formulation similar especially to that of a State with a monarch.

Religious associations were also known in medieval Japan, and Jacqueline Stone begins her study of the practice of reciting nenbutsu at the time of death with a discussion of the Samadhi Assembly of Twenty-Five established on Mt. Hiei in 986.
Nenbutsu recitation at the time of death is often noted in passing as having been rejected by Honen, but Stone gives us an understanding of both the practices themselves and the logics that motivated them.
Nenbutsu practices within Japanese esoteric Buddhism, or “secret nenbutsu,” constitute a fourth form, and this is where Sanford locates Kakuban.

I have yet to understand whether or not the Nenbutsu (after having received Decided Faith) is to be recited for the purpose of ones rebirth in the Land of Bliss or whether it is for the purpose of thanksgiving for the Grace of Buddha?
After the moment of awakened Faith in rebirth, never believe that the recitation of the Nenbutsu is the karma for ones rebirth, but believe that it is only the expression of thanksgiving for the Grace of Buddha.
By lifelong homage is meant the Nenbutsu of Thanksgiving for the Grace of Buddha.

 Japan's Culture
The Jodo sect emphasized the repeated chanting of a simple prayer (nenbutsu) by groups of followers, who sometimes jumped about to the rhythm of the accompanying bell in a primitive kind of dance called nenbutsu odori.
Kabuki dance was originally classified as odori, since it drew on the nenbutsu odori and used popular songs for accompaniment.
It is said to have begun in the early seventeenth century with the Kyoto performances of a troupe of female dancers led by an attendant at Izumo Shrine.

As the Shonin (Shinran) spread the principle of exclusive nenbutsu practice in the land of Hitachi, those who doubted and reviled him were few, while those who believed and followed him were many.
The principle of single direction, exclusive nen[butsu] is thus liver and spleen to [the notion of] impending birth; it is eye and marrow to our tradition.
He answered those words saying, "He is a nenbutsu man who follows the admonitions of Zenshin (Shinran)." At this point the layman held up his shaku (whisk of authority) and making a respectful bow, did not venture to say another word Ð whereupon the dream came to an end.

 Fascicle Two
The conscientious observance (of the manner of conduct as established by this sect) means the adherence to the basic motive of maintaining inconspicuity in our relationships with those of the other sects and with people of the general public by avoiding bold open attitudes and speech on behalf of our sect.
Recently, among the followers of the Nenbutsu of our sect, certain individuals have intentionally expounded the basic principles of our sect blatantly in public and have vocally belittled and degraded the teachings of the other sects in the belief that by doing so they were enhancing the status of our sect.
Thus, the substance of reciting the Nenbutsu is the state of receiving Faith of the Other-Power.

Unlike Nenbutsu no Tetsu, other killers may glare at their target, or may have a crazy or sad expression on their face, but Tetsu, with an eerie, faint smile, seemed to have fun killing his opposition, like it was nothing.
Out of all of the others, he was one that really made a person shiver with fear.
It may be said that Tsutomu Yamazaki, who played the part of "Nenbutsu no Tetsu," has the perfect character to totally fit the part he played.

Hell, this word would be the crucial point for understanding Nenbutsu because most of The Japanese subconsiously think that bad guys will fall into the pit of the Hell after his death, and that is also the very point which can determinately separate the thought of The Japanese from the thought of The Chinese.
The most of the Japanese are unconsciously afraid of the falling into hell after death, and that is leading to birth of Nenbutsu.
Although Nembutsu would be foolish pagan notion to The westerners, it is still unconsciously engraved on The Japanese people minds not only for the multitudes, but also of many who pride themselves on their high education and liberal sentiments.

Although numerous Zen clerics made use of the nenbutsu in their teaching, during the seventeenth century the legitimacy of that practice became the subject of heated debate within the Myôshinji stream of Rinzai.
This presentation will focus on one node of the debate over the fusion of Rinzai Zen and nenbutsu, the Myôshinji establishment’s attack on Ungo Kiyô’s Ôjôyôka [Song of Essentials for Rebirth] during the mid-seventeenth century.
By analyzing the genesis of this novel method of group nenbutsu practice, the presenter will reveal the continuing allure of Pure Land imagery and practice outside of the Jôdo schools in the early modern era.
