Having passed among the gentle hills of Northamptonshire it enters the rural part of the City of Peterborough, passes the Nene Valley Railway and the East of England Showground.
After the cathedral city itself, the landscape changes to the Nene Washes in The Fens and their vast, seemingly endless horizons.

 VINTAGE BIKE THE NENE VALLEY RAILWAY
The Nene Valley Railway runs from Peterborough to Wansford Station which is on part of the old A1 at Stibbingson about 2 miles from the village of Wansford itself.
A end on junction with the Eastern Counties Railway was made at Peterborough and passenager trains used the Peterborough East station near the present football ground on the other side of the East Coast Main Line to the station the Nene Valley Railway now uses at Peterborough.
On 1st June 1977 the Nene Valley Railway was opened with a train from Wansford station with Nord 2-6-0 and a Swedish 2-6-2 tank pulling a 4-cor set in SR green.

And it was those words that were coursing through my mind last week when I visited the Nene Valley Railway for a morning on the travelling post office.
As the son of a retired trainspotter, I have lots of memories of visiting the Nene Valley Railway, and various other steam lines when I was young, so I felt quite at home on Wansford station surrounded by the volunteers who ensure the line keeps running.
But the Nene Valley is planning to offer travelling post office days in the future, as volunteers work on reconstructing a former tender.

Privately owned, based on the Nene Valley Railway, near Peterborough, 40106 was the second Class 40 to enter preservation, but the first to be returned to operational condition.
After years of anonymous hard work with the rest of the fleet, by 1978 the loco was among a handful of Class 40's which still hadn't been repainted into Corporate Blue and yellow.

The first of these is the Nene Valley Railway, where the locos arrived on May 16th, ready for the Mini Diesel Gala on May 18th/19th and Golden Jubilee event at the beginning of June.

A little while ago we reported that 4920 had failed on the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) with a loose left hand piston head, this was repaired by using an old piston from our other large GWR tender locomotive 3803.
The 9th September saw Dumbleton Hall, recently back from hire on the Nene Valley Railway, in steam at Buckfastleigh for the very first time.
With an axleweight of 18 tons 19cwt it is too heavy for the top end of the branch but it is hoped that HMRI will grant permission to run it between Staverton and Totnes where there are no limiting structures to prevent its use.

 Nene Valley Railway Opens.
A new service, run by the Peterborough Railway Society, will run between Orton Mere and Wansford at weekends and bank holidays.
Last year the buildings at North Station were demolished due to dry rot damage, and were replaced by temporary buildings.
This is predicted to commence in the spring of 1978.

The carriage is part of a complete 4-coach set owned by a company set up by the Southern Electric Group, having been bought by them straight out of service on British Rail in 1972.

Drinks, sandwiches etc are available in the cafe at Wansford station, where you will also find a model railway, gift shop and children's play area (for under-8s).

It spent some time at Ashford before migrating to the Nene Valley Railway (where it actually inaugurated passenger services) until bought by the Science Museum as a unique, working example of early locomotove compound technology.
