Term adopted by the Dutch pioneer of abstract art, Mondrian, for his own type of abstract painting.
Basically means new art (painting and sculpture are plastic arts).
Also applied to the work of De Stijl circle of artists, at least up to Mondrian's secession from the group in 1923.

This idea for an aesthetic language was based on Schoenmaeker’s neoplatonic system which he called ‘positive mysticism’ or ‘plastic mathematics’.
The debate between the members of De Stijl on how to approach colour, centred around their readings of the colour theories of Chevreul, Goethe and most importantly the contemporary theoretician Otswald.
Mondrian, in his aim for purely plastic expression, searched for a method of completley dislocating and objectifying colour.

The principles of constructivism theory are derived from three main movements that evolved in the early part of the 20th century: Suprematism in Russia, De Stijl (Neo Plasticism) in Holland and the Bauhaus in Germany.
