		I do two perhaps related things: (1) I claim that supporting neoconfederates is itself morally wrong; (2) I draw a conclusion from what Ashcroft himself has said, namely, that he must do more to show the world that Lee/Jackson/Davis were not pursuing a 'perverted agenda'.
		You are free to disagree that supporting a neoconfederate group is morally wrong, but that doesn't make the claim 'guilt by association', at least not in the tendentious, dismissive sense that you want.

		It was Atrios back on November 30 who, in a felicitous bit of timing, began talking about "American Renaissance" magazine and the neoconfederate movement before Trent even uttered his most recent racist swill.
		The issue was pooh-poohed by conservobloggers who said in comments that Atrios was flogging a straw man because the GOP had purged it's Klan members years ago and moved to the "center."

		Firstly: why haven't any of the neoConfederate's in this thread confronted the fact (cited by Richard, CFL and myself) that nobody in the South gave a shit about the Confederate flag until the segregation controversy in the 1950s.
		Second: Wolves' main points seems to be that the flag can stand for different things for different people.

		It should be said, amidst Markos's assault on TNR, that no magazine where the publisher just penned a Gore 2008 endorsement should really be considered "on the other side" or the "Joe Lieberman" weekly.
		Ryan Lizza's recent work on George Allen's neoconfederate sympathies has been superb, anyone on the left who has the slightest interest in Iraq should be reading Spencer Ackerman's every word, and the magazine is, in general, a strong and forceful advocate for progressive domestic policies.
		I do, like Jon Chait, worry about the "with us or against us" overtones of Kos's riposte -- the left should judge its allies on more than friendliness and tone.
