The tiny organisms are trapped on the silky bristles of the baleen and swallowed when enough food has accumulated.
The pygmy right whale is the sole member of the family Neobalaenidae, is much smaller than the other rights and has a dorsal fin, but has long baleen with fine bristles, much like the larger right whales.
The pygmy right is found only in the Southern Hemisphere, and is poorly known, but it is thought that this species follows similar migration routes as the larger rights, and eats similar crustaceans, such as copepods.
