Progressive metal, for example, does not have a clear identity anymore, and this is mainly caused by its blurred margin with the genre's closest cousin, power metal.
Neoclassical metallers Symphony X are often called progressive, and sometimes even symphonic power metal of Blind Guardian is considered to be progressive metal, which is a pure sacrilege to the original understanding of progressive metal term.
Meanwhile, traditional progressive metal fades to the bottom layers of the underground, partly because it is overshadowed by power metal (which rejoices its biggest success as a genre today), but mostly because the last three or five years did not bring any new noteworthy progressive metal bands.

Avant garde metal tends to be theatrical and melodramatic, attempting an infusion of art music, impressionistic and disjointed arrangements, and metal.
The forebearer of death and fl metal, thrash brought a higher level of intensity into metal, primarily by combining the intensity and tempos of early hardcore punk with the rigidity and dexterity of heavy metal.
Unlike prog metal, which demands some degree of complexity, technical metal should be continuously, ferociously complex; even in the lighter, more subtle sections of the music, the sound should be very developed and multi-faceted.

Maybe "opera metal" or "operatic metal" would be a better term - I've heard them referred to as that too.
I never considered Blind Guardian to be neoclassical as I don't see any explicit baroque influences in their music.
Your comments did make me begin to doubt the validity of the term "symphonic metal" so I may replace it with "operatic metal" because, to some, there is little difference between "symphonic" and "neo-classical".

Many musicians love the challenge of Death Metal and love to combine other styles into to it that are just as challenging; such as classical music, and jazz.

Whereas prog metal simply attempts more difficult arrangements, the avant garde throws out the rule book altogether and approaches composition with a fresh, or inventive outlook- complexity isn't an issue, but wild creativity is. Avant garde metal tends to be theatrical and melodramatic, attempting an infusion of art music, impressionistic and disjointed arrangements, and metal.
Doom metal sticks to the slower and mid tempos, with dirge-like (often downtuned) riffs and dark, somber melodic harmonies.
Besides death and fl metal vocals, gothic metal usually peppers itself with bewitching soprano vocals and male baritone deliveries.

This situation has saddened many fans of neoclassical music because it is a tragedy that so talented a guitarist should be stricken with such a debilitating disease that has taken away his playing talents from the entire world.

Neoclassical Rock, put basically is ordinary rock, but with scales and chord patterns following music from the classical era, rather than traditional rock pentatonic scales.
Symphonic metal is usually based on a mythic theme involving Quests, dragons, evil lords etc. Although it is not possible for most people to relate to these directly I think it is more the atmosphere that people feel.
Progressive symphonic metal is also seeing a revival however is still very much an "underground" choice in most areas.

Pure energy and spirit meeting the first conceptual glimpses of the new style of death metal, these songs use fast narrative metal in a post-Slayer highspeed tremelo style to make neoclassically-influenced songs that are epic in their instant of impact and then timelessly diffuse.
Foundational in their influence on both rippingly fast death metal and the rising fl metal genre, Massacra were among the first metal bands to give rise to classically-influenced structure in nihilistic music.
Cadenced to the motion of human beings in times of war or great need, the rhythms carrying melodic progression in the shifting layers of riffage that compose these hymns of violence are distinct in hook and architecture, and open a world of possible lexicon in texture and shape that has yet to be fully explored.

There was this German band in the late eighties and early nineties called Vendetta, that did not what we do at all, but they had the just the most extreme clashes of styles in some of their music...some really weird time changes and stuff so that's totally got me into what we're doing.

It's obvious guitarist and songwriter Hawk is influenced by the great classical composers as well as snapping up a thing or two by the major leading neoclassical guitarists of the 80`s and 90`s, as most of the material has a neoclassical feeling to it.
The band itself is not totally based on that neo-classical sound however, and it's quite easy to hear their 80’s metal band influences at times even though the guitarist keeps his neo style alive throughout most of the disc.
Unfortunately, his high range is marred by the inability to reach these notes without giving way to his limitations, and it's not hard to hear the strain in his tone as he reaches way too high at times and seems to lose his voice in the process.
