Neodesha, the second largest town in Wilson county, is located near the confluence of the Verdigris and Fall rivers in the center of a rich agricultural district, 11 miles southeast of Fredonia, the county seat.
Neodesha is also in the midst of the oil fields, and has a large oil refinery and tank field.
Neodesha is the outgrowth of a trading post established in 1867 by A. McCartney and A. Phelon, among the Osage Indians.

From 1897 to 1970 a petroleum refinery operated in the southeastern Kansas town of Neodesha.
Neodesha now says it wants more than $423 million in damages, less than half of the $1 billion the city sought when it originally filed the lawsuit March 29, 2004 in Wilson County District Court.

ERIE — In a struggle he likened to the biblical fight between David and Goliath, the attorney for the city of Neodesha told jurors today that it would be up to them to decide whether the world’s second-largest oil company gets to use a small southeast Kansas town as its toxic waste dump.
Neodesha is seeking more than $423 million to recover the costs of cleanup and damage the city says came from an oil refinery that once operated there.
Besides the city of Neodesha, other plaintiffs are Wilson County, the local school district, the state, Neodesha Plastics Inc., Fiberglass Engineering, and property owners Anna Harshman and Wade Jones, who are acting as class representatives.

In 1891, four Neodesha businessmen contacted William M. Mills, a Pennsylvania man who had drilled gas wells and installed gas distributions systems in several southeast Kansas cities.
By 1904, Kansas was producing four million barrels of crude oil per year and, in 1925, ranked fifth among the states in oil production.
Norman No. 1 was abandoned in 1919 and remained overgrown along the banks of the Verdigris River until 1961 when a replica of the original derrick was erected on the old well site as a memorial.

In the pass BP along with the KDHE (Kansas Dept. Health and Environment) had told the City and residents of Neodesha that the contamination was manageable and was not migrating through the community.

 Flooding in southeast Kansas
July 12 - The Very Rev. Jerry Adinolfi, rector of St. Paul’s, Coffeyville, was among the first people to survey flood-damaged areas of town on July 11 as residents were allowed in for the first time since flood waters poured over the city’s levees on June 30.
He and other clergy in the southeast Kansas town offered pastoral care as residents began to pick through what is left of their belongings.
According to reports on the web site of the Coffeyville Journal, what they found was evidence of high water mixed with sewage and 72,000 gallons of crude oil that spilled from a local refinery when it was swamped by rising waters from the Verdigris River.
